Have a relatively spur of the moment trip to Chicago this weekend. If we were trying to stop at a place or two on the way back into the city from Six Flags, where would you recommend? Priority to best beer, second to best food with beer. Thanks in advance!

Haven't been there but Only Child is like 5 minutes from Six Flags.

Only Child will be the most convenient stop by far, as mentioned above. Tighthead in Mundelein is probably the best other option up that way until you get down to Evanston/NW Chicago. It's about 20 min southwest of Only Child/Great America.

Nice! Thanks guys. Actually flying into O'Hare tomorrow and will probably drive up to be near Six Flags for Friday so this really helps narrow the field. I think there were like 20 along the way and it really helps to know which you locals prefer.

Still open to other input if anyone else wants to chime in.

In Chicago I want to hit up Pipeworks, and we'll probably do the Chicago Craft Beer Fest on Saturday. Any other "musts" in regards to breweries I might not think of?

Is Lake Bluff Brewing any good? If you take the old Route 41 up to Gurnee from Chicago its a short stop away.

Also, I don't believe you can hit Pipeworks up as they don't have to tap room. Go to Half Acre instead.

Thanks much! This is exactly the reason I came here - sorry to sound like an idiot but I absolutely didn't know that. First time visiting IL since I've been able to drink, know very little and trying to plan short notice.

You'll get many great ideas here and in other Chicago threads. You said you're heading to Great America..depending on how important it is to you, you're going to be about 15 south of a Woodman's in Kenosha as well. So for another 45 minutes of time you can head in WI and get some New Glarus as well. Just adding that as you'll be so close to the border. It's going to be a very hot weekend so hopefully you hit up the water park at Six Flags as well! Have fun.

Another vote for Only Child. They put out some really good beers. Worth the stop, IMHO.

You're going to want to stop at Only Child and hope they still have some Double Dog Dare left.

Also ZumBier in Waukegan has some decent beers.

No food on site at either, but OC has menus for local delivery.
