At least they gave mention to Live Oak. Don't care about the Jester King hype, Live Oak is still the best in Texas...rabble rabble rabble  Personal opinion aside not a bad list, as these things go.

I agree that Fremont is the best brewery in Washington, but they are starting to get some competition. Selkirk Abbey is also probably a good pick for Idaho. I don't consider Breakside the best brewery in Oregon, but it depends on a lot on the criteria applied. And I'd pick Anchorage over Midnight Sun for Alaska.

If you need BA to tell you what a good brewery is.....

How about we wait until greenbriar stops putting beers in my glass with obvious fermentation flaws before we hand them the crown.

Breakside for Oregon.? I would have gone probably Cascade, Block 15 or De garde.

Agreed. I love Surly, don't get me wrong, but I feel like other breweries need to get the recognition they deserve. Indeed and Steel Toe popped into my mind for distributed beers, Bauhaus a strong 3rd, while Dangerous Man is definitely my favorite of all of them.

A lot of people in Charleston area prefer COAST to Westbrook, but I honestly don't think it's because of their beer. I really don't like Holy City. All they make is mediocre stuff. Westbrook is definitely the best brewery in SC. Look at all the amazing beers they make/made.

Wow, usually these lists are crap, just a bunch of high volume brewers (biggest in each states is more like it) but this one is very good. This guy did some homework. No arguments really, in states where I have experience. Nailed New England.

note: I've not had anything from Free State in KS since the 1990s, and it was good then. Tallgrass might deserve the win there despite my love for Free State and many hours spent there.

The point is, for a brewery to be included on such a list, they have either a proven track record, or they must be innovative compared to the other breweries in the state. That is why BBW is always on the top of these lists for WV. They were the first in the state to bottle their beers, the only brewery that bottles Belgian style beers, and none of the breweries that have started since then have given any reason to overtake BBW on these lists.

And do you really think BA has no influence on the 50 breweries that are on that list?

I would go with Burial over Wicked Weed for North Carolina. That statement might turn a few heads but I feel like the massive increase in Wicked Weed's production has hurt the quality a bit. I can't say anything about Fonta Flora cause I haven't had the chance to make it out there yet...

Edit: Pretty good list overall though!

I disagree with the choice for WA. I'd go with Bale Breaker.

Three Floyds might be the most popular in Indiana but in my opinion they are not the best.

Disagree with Oregon (I vote De Garde) and my home state of Michigan ( I would put both Bell's and Short's, Possibly even Jolly Pumpkin, ahead of Founders). But for the most part I would agree with the choices.

Agreed SO DAMN MUCH. This list actually got a lot of states right - funny how the pick for our state was a hilarious whiff. DuClaw is one of the reasons craft beer from this state isn't taken seriously! People actually WANT to trade for Double Duckpin...Flying Dog's single-hop DIPAs are liquid gold...the Eastern Shore has quite a few hidden gems (Evolution, RAR, Burley Oak)...no, let's put DuClaw on the list because they have cool heavy metal-esque labels! Okay, Devil's Milk is really good (as are a few others), but there's no way the brewery that put out mediocrity like Oz, Serum, or Naked Fish should be our state's best brewery.

I swear, with each passing day, I grow more and more convinced the craft beer revolution has left Maryland in the dust...if you don't mind me, I'll go drown my sorrows in some local Maryland beer tonight

    • MD - where I live - I disagree with, though I don't particularly have a favorite. Union Craft is pretty good though(thanks poster above).
    • DC - where I work and go often - disagree with, Right Proper is better. DC Brau is better too.
    • VA - where I go often - I agree with(Hardywood Park), but Devil's Backbone is severely underrated. Hardywood Park seems more bomber focused, Devil's Backbone more sixer focused. Vienna Lager is great, Eight Point IPA, Schwarzbier are all very good.

I agree DC Brau is great, but I like the selection of 3 Stars. I had their stuff at ACBF and Desolation was one of the best beers at the fest IMO.

I think overall the list reaches on some selections but it was good to see a list picking some of these breweries that are up and coming and not the old standbys for each state.

Technically DC has no "old standbys"....DC Brau was the first in DC to brew again, and hasn't been around very long.

To be honest I don't know much about the DC beer scene. I only know the beers when I have had them at ACBF in Boston. DC Brau makes great stuff and they are starting to distribute up here now which is great.

The standby comment was meant more for the area I am familiar with. For instance they could have picked Sam Adams or Harpoon for Mass and instead they picked Tree House which I applaud them for.

The challenge with DC Brau is anything beyond their main set of beers - like OTWOA - rarely make it outside of sales at the brewery. Rarely have stores in DC itself even had it.
