I prefer born on, packaged on, bottled on than born on date.

I still have never heard a good reason as to why bottled/canned on dates aren't already an industry standard, or at least why we aren't quickly moving that way.

Disagree, most brewers using this criteria for hoppy beers are overly optimistic. Two months past bottling date is all I'm willing to go with my money, especially on dry hopped beers.

How about letting the INFORMED consumer decide? I do value taste over all but many beers fall off quickly.

Using that logic we should all eat at McDonalds & drink BMC. ( at least AB uses the right dating to make me happy ).

The trademark owner of "Born On" has a pretty simple solution :

As someone who has been checking dates on beer for many decades, I'd say the industry IS quickly moving that way. I see more date codes, prominently displayed codes, more "consumer-friendly" dating (i.e., non-Julian), dates that specify if they're "bottling" or "best before", etc., than ever before.

I'd say the brewers (save for the very small, local ones, who often self-distribute or use outside mobile canning services) who are not dating are now the exception not the rule.

And, it is not as if if a beer is undated, or out of code, there's not something else to buy these days in most regions.

I don't know, whenever I see these constant "date code" complaint threads, I unfortunately do fall back on the
    old dude's reaction.

Not gonna read about this topic yet again but I will leave a comment. That's ego.

I prefer Born On, but for the general public, who aren't as well informed as people here tend to be re: how old is too old, a Best By date is far more useful.

I think I know where you pulled that from - but can you verify who the trademark owner of that is? thanks

I agree! I know Goose Island says there IPA is good for 180 days, that's 6 months! I've had one @ 174 days and 1 @ around 60 days, big difference.

Exactly, I suspect the vaugery of Best Buy Dates moves beer, but does nothing for the reputation of said beer.

Bottled on date and NOT the julian calnedar please. Should be very easy to put this on all bottles in the form which we do use and enjoy, month/day/year

I prefer the brewed on date because it allows me to decide what I consider to be acceptable.

"Brewed on"? There are very few "Brewed on" dates on beers - usually reserved for special releases, once a year beers, etc. (The classic example being Samichlaus which traditionally is brewed once a year on Dec. 6).

Without knowing how long a beer is fermented and lagered/aged before packaging, a "brewed on" date would be pretty useless as far as freshness goes.

Noted above, in edited (for space) form, from Trademark TESS Search webpage.

And still active - "LIVE" in their terminology - renewed in 2007 - thus the ®
(despite abandoning a separate "Budweiser... Born On" trademark noted in post #54 ).

I definitely prefer the born on date but I'd take either instead of not having it at all. When it comes to certain styles I won't even consider buying the beer if I can't get some sort of idea when it was produced.

*I* prefer born-on dating so I can tell if the beer is fresh enough for my personal palette. And yes, living where I do, two week - sometime two day - Limbo is not a rarity. I don't generally buy it older than a month.

That being said, someone pointed out the relationship of "best by" dates and the beer getting rotated off of the shelves. I have personally seen entire walls of bombers probably at the 1 year mark regardless of style, and run into multiple beer reps who say "oh [some kind of IPA or hoppy beer] lasts for at least a year." Are you kidding me? Don't nobody got time to sort through 8 shelves of disappointingly old beer.

Moral of the story - I'd risk a slightly older-than-I-prefer IPA if best by dates forced stores and distributors to rotate their stock. If breweries had to choose one or the other, Please do best by dating. And please print it on the label; it rubs off of the bottle neck more often than not.

Definitely bottled on date. I hate the best buy date, I like my IPAs super fresh. They do not taste as good a month later. And I have no idea how long there is between the bottling date and "best by". Let me decide if it is still good.
