I'm in LA for the week and I'm looking to try some new Cali brews. Interested to hear recommendations, but don't bother with beers anyone would know. I'm looking for more obscure breweries. Thanks!

You'll get better results by asking in the Pacific forum where most of the folks who know CA beers hang out.

I lived in Redlands, between LA and Palm Springs, for a little while a few years ago. There's a brewery there called Hanger 24. They brew some pretty good beers including a wheat beer brewed with locally grown oranges. I miss Having Hanger 24 beers available.

I meant Hangar 24, I'm not sure how I typed in Hanger. Lol...

In OC everyone knows the Bruery. Beyond that Bootleggers makes a great IPA called Knuckle Sandwich. Finally there is a new brewery called Valiant Brewery which makes a very good IPA called Jericho and a porter called Pathos which I recommend.

As was previously stated, Hangar 24 is pretty good. Their Pugachev's Cobra and Imperial Stout are both world class. I don't think their imperial stout ever goes on sale but I was lucky enough to go to a beer dinner put on by them and was lucky enough to try it.

+1 for Hangar 24 Orange Wheat (grab it at Ralph's for cheap).

As much as I hate Golden Road, their berliner weiss is worth trying. I'm a big fan of Black Diamond Jagged Edge IPA if you can find it at a store. Speakeasy Payback Porter is solid too.

If you canfind anything by Alpine Beer Company (Alpine, CA)get it. They brew two of my favorite beers of any style. The Duet is a nicely balanced, robust IPA made with two hops. The Nelson is another west coast IPA made with Nelson Sauvin hops and a bit of rye for bite. Their Pure Hoppiness gets snatched up at the brewery then sold on ebay (which pisses of the people at Alpine) To find a retailer anywhere, you need to go to Alpine's website and drill down to find retailers, especially in LA. try this link: https://alpinebeerco.wordpress.com/where-to-buy/ I live in east county San Diego and they are difficult to find here.

There's a brewery between Los Angeles and San Diego in a town called Escondido. The brewery is called Stone. Not sure how easy it is to get in L.A. but it is worth looking for.
    Enjoy your trip

Stone is by far not the best in San Diego.

This. Stone is the last brewery I would go to. Especially since he asked for obscure breweries.

Considering he's looking for obscure breweries you might as well have recommended Sierra Nevada LOL.

Any Almanac Farm to Barrel release (Barrel Noir, Farmers Reserve 3 & 4), Golden Road Get Up Offa that Brown. That's my 2 cents.

Kinda depends on what you're looking for. Sours? IPAs? Etc.

Being here for only 14 years, I'm not entirely well versed in California speak - but I've never heard anybody call it "Cali".
