Not sure what beers I should be picking up for trade or to just thoroughly enjoy, any help or advice would be appreciated!

What city are you in? All of your place reviews are from Buffalo, so I am guessing there. Certainly different availability there than Brooklyn or NYC, etc.

I'm in Buffalo, most of the local breweries out here are less than stellar...

I would say most of the really great breweries in NY don't bottle/can - Barrier, Peekskill, Finback, Rushing Duck.
a few do intermittently SingleCut and Other Half. Looks like you need to plan a road trip!

Have you had beers from Big Ditch Brewing Company?

    Cheers!

I have had the Excavator but thought CBW's brown ale was way better. Any other recommendations?

Sorry, I am not too familiar with the breweries of New York.

Hopefully @utopiajane and @cavedave and others will be of more help to you.

    Cheers!

If you are looking for beer for trading, it won't be local beer you are looking for in WNY. There is good beer to drink and enjoy in the area (Southern Tier, Ithaca, Abandon, and a bunch of other small breweries). Your best bet for trading beer is to find where and when Remarkable Liquids delivers. They are bringing beers from NYC in small quantities from great brewers.

I've thought everything that I had from Community Beer Works was really solid and tasty. I really enjoyed their IPA when I went, I thought it was one of the best made in the state. Resurgence has potential, not quite there yet, but certainly a cool place to go to.

In terms of trading, as people said above, you're not going to be able to trade any local Western New York beers. No demand for them. Take road trips to Pennsylvania (Voodoo, Tired Hands, Pizza Boy, Forest and Main) or New England, specifically Vermont (Hill Farmstead, Lawson's, Fiddlehead, Alchemist, etc) or Massachusetts (Tree House, Night Shift, Trillium etc) to find tradeable beers. And also have an amazing time going to these places!

In terms of NY beers, the Hudson Valley and NYC is where it's at. There's some amazing breweries in the Hudson Valley- Peekskill, Captain Lawrence, Keegan, Rushing Duck, Plan Bee, Newburgh, Crossroads, and a good amount in the city (Other Half, Singlecut, Finback, Threes, Gun Hill, etc). I'm sure I'm missing some good ones. Take a trip downstate to get the best beer NY has to offer.

I think a better bet would be to drive a couple of hours to NE Ohio to see what can be had there. Probably some rarer stuff available that you could trade with your friends back at home. Also, you could drive a couple of hours to VooDoo for their limited releases. You should easily be able to trade those for goodies.

Actually, Finback and Rushing Duck do bottle as well as the others you mentioned. Finback BA BQE is definitely tradeable if they release bottles again. I just enjoyed a bottle of Rushing Duck Dog's Bollocks last week.

You're right - I've seen BQE in bottles. I missed a Rushing Duck event at the Jeffrey - maybe I just need to take a drive and visit.

I hope both you and OP message me when you come to Mid Hudson Valley, let's go sample beers. I love showing off this area.

And I love Community, it wouldn't be such a bad thing if you brought Frank pale or IPA with you:slight_smile:

Will do! I will have to bring you some of their singularity: Mosaic, it's regarded as their best beer yet.

I really wish Rochester got more Community Beer Works stuff, they seem to just be focused on Buffalo at the moment, but we get the lone keg here and there. Community Beer Works retired "The IPA" for now, and replaced it with "That IPA." Though I really loved The IPA and am sad to see it go, "That IPA" sounds promising- Mosaic, Simcoe and Zythos. Nice combo methinks.

You know I'll hit you up when I go down there- working on convincing the fiancee to visit her friend who lives in Dobbs Ferry- so they can do their thing, whatever that may be, and I can sneak away and get my beer on. I hope I can make it down on a weekend where Plan Bee is having something going on- went down for the Savage release and thought Evan and the whole operation was super cool. One of the nicest guys I've ever met.

I do remember hearing New England Brewing Co had some beer that fairly regularly made it out to Buffalo. If you can find any, basically anything by them is worth checking out.

I've had one of the Singularities before, I wish I could remember which hop it was. I do remember really enjoying it quite a bit.

I know at least with Rochester (and probably Buffalo by extension), we haven't gotten any shipments of NEBCO in about a year. We used to get Sea Hag and Gandhi Bot somewhat regularly, that well seems to have dried up unfortunately. It seems like they retracted distro to focus on getting enough to their immediate area.

Awesome offer dude- not sure I'll be in Buffalo soon though. I want to visit again soon, we'll have to grab a beer or two at the Blue Monk next time I'm there.
