Read howtobrew.com. Buy an equipment kit for brewing extract beers from your local homebrew shop or from one of the major suppliers like Northern Brewer, Midwest Supplies, Austin Homebrew, or others (there's a recently revived thread on online suppliers). You may already own some of what you need. Also buy an extract with steeping grains ingredient kit to brew a favorite style. I prefer using dry malt extract when I brew with extracts, but most ingredient kits, IME, use liquid extracts. Because liquid extracts do not keep as well as dry, I would buy them from a major retailer that replaces their inventory regularly.

Yeah, a kit is the best place to start. Choose one from a beer style that you like from the websites mentioned above.

If you wanted to get your own stuff my friend found this deal http://www.valuebrew.com/collections/home-page-featured/products/valuebrew-starter-bundle

Pretty good deal, he got his with their Doc Brown Ale to get started in homebrewing. He doesn't know how much he is going to brew yet and didn't want to spend a ton on stuff he may not use that often. This will get him what he needs to brew for around 100.

Otherwise their kits aren't bad either...

Brewers best kits are always good from what I have tried and sampled from other people using the kits... a little pricey but good.
