Whatever it really is its characteristics are identical to bourbon. And straight jack not a great one IMO. I'll take Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek and Woodfords reserve over JD any day. Or Pappy Van Winkle ....heh heh

As quoted by every bourbon trail tour guide i went to in Kentucky, " All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon." Literally EVERY single tour.

    • Must be made in the United States.
    • Must contain 51 percent corn.
    • Must be aged in new oak charred barrels.
    • Must be distilled to no more than 160 proof and entered into the barrel at 125 proof.
    • Must be bottled at no less than 80 proof.
    • Must not contain any added flavoring, coloring or other additives.
These are the general parameters to stay within.

On topic...JD Mexican Cake is the only barrel aged Jack beer I believe I've ever had and it was phenomonal!

Off topic...bourbon can be made anywhere in the world. Your last point is correct. Jack IS bourbon until it's charcoal filtered, which imparts flavor to the distilled spirit, no longer making it bourbon. Now ya'll quit bickering and grab a damn beer!!

The barrel aging imparts the same flavors to the spirit, so what about that? The inside of the barrel is charred, btw.

I 100% believe this. I also love how people bitch about how Jim Beam / Heaven Hills / (insert lower "end" or "quality" bourbon/whiskey name here) barrels aren't "good" and they would rather have it aged in pappy, etc.... yet some of those barrels give off the best flavors.

Pretty sure Olde Hickory's Bardstown Barleywine was aged in JD barrels. But it was only made in 07 so probably gonna have a hard tracking that one down.

This years BA Sexual Chocolate was done in Pappy 15 barrels, last year they used Buffalo Trace, and I couldn't tell them apart except by a lucky guess.

Lost in all this JD is/is not bourbon/whiskey debate, is the Mexican Cake situation... I'm confused... Mexican Cake is not a barrel-aged product. Barrel aged versions listed on the site include tequila (ISO :stuck_out_tongue: lol) and Four Roses bourbon (is it really bourbon?), and a Double Barrel Mexican Cake (not JD aged), but I see no listing for a JD version...

Can anyone clarify? Is it called something different? Thanks

    From Jack's Very Own Website.

    Is Jack Daniel's a bourbon?
Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon - it's a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel's is dripped slowly - drop-by-drop - through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for aging. This special process gives Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey its rare smoothness. It's this extra step - charcoal mellowing – that makes Jack Daniel's a Tennessee Whiskey.

Witches Hat did a Whiskey Barrel Night Fury that used Jack Daniels barrels. It was pretty damn good. Even better, they were doing growler fills of it.

Thank the good Lord you didn't spell it "whisky" or we'd have ANOTHER huge can of worms opened up.

Every JD barrel aged beer I've had has been OK to not very good. Mostly because Jack Daniels really sucks.
