I worked through plenty of lighter-bodied pale lagers in July, so that 12-pack of silo cans didn't last long, at all.

It's an all-malt beer, but it's not Bohemian style except perhaps in that it is closer to what people imagine a good "Pre-Prohibition" lager to be like, and many of those were patterned after the broader Bohemian style pale lager, especially e.g. the Pilsener style.

At the same time there are Minnesota-brewed pale lagers with more malt character than Minnesota Gold, and to that end it drinks closer to the same sort of shitty, bargain-priced Swill that I drink every frickin' day. :grinning:

Still, I'd be happy enough to make it my every day drinker.

I put a second vote in on Wagonparty. Love me anything Bauhaus, be it brew or band.

I really like fire brick and that would definitely be my favorite, but I also have to include surly hell on that list.

Schell's does make great lagers. On the other hand, Surly Hell is hard for me to praise as a lager - it isn't lagered for more than a couple weeks.

It's fermented cool with lager yeast. That's more important compared to longer cold storage in my book. Lager it in your fridge then.

Hard to lager a beer in a bottle, when the lager yeast has been centerfuged out.

So, does it taste like it's only been lagered for 2 weeks?

Absolutely. It's not ready, when it's ready.
Drink a Yokel, then drink Hell. Let me know what you think.

Hard to pick a best, and several awesome beers have already been mentioned. Tip of the hat to Beaver Island Oktoberfest

I agree. A lot of what Surly makes doesn't fit neatly into a traditional category.

Surly Hell, any of the Bauhaus lagers, and better try the Surly Fest while it's available. Get a Schell's or Summit Oktoberfest to compare, can't go wrong with either of those.

I doubt that they used a New Ulm yeast, it's all-malt, and it isn't as hoppy*. But altogether it's pretty close. :sunglasses:

Summit Octoberfest and Maibock, Schell[s Pils, Bauhaus Wonderstuff, Bent Paddle Pilsner (and Roof Rack Vienna Lager), and a ton that I'm forgetting. There really are a lot of great lagers around these days.

Another one for Schell's Bock; top notch, I think. (Respect to TH's, Bauhaus's, and Fair State's offerings too.)
