I want to take a beer to a friend in another state who's not a hophead, but likes porters. Need some advice on a good porter or stout brewed by a NC brewery, preferable sold in a bomber that I can get at a Total Wine or other store right off I-77 on my way to visit him.

My vote for best stout in NC is Foothills Sexual Chocolate, however it is not readily accessible. But you could get Foothills Peoples Porter, which is also an excellent brew, pretty easily.

Olde Hickory Imperial Stout, Brawleys Beverage (around 5-10 minutes off 77) had cases when I was there yesterday.

I somehow stumbled upon a bottle of Pisgah Valdez Stout at of all places Sabor Latin Street Grill in Charlotte...had to take a double take at that one...lol. To me Valdez is one of the best beers I have ever had from NC if you like stouts or coffee, as stated Foothills People's Porter is very good, or if you hit NC NoDa Coco Loco Porter is very god and also bottled.

I found Duck-Rabbit Rabid Duck to be enjoyable and unique. I've only seen it in 6 packs, but its easy on the wallet and packs a solid punch in terms of abv.

Are we talking about a stout or porter that is available right now or just what we believe to be the best?

I agree with Olde Hickory Imperial Stout, Pisgah Valdez (if you like a coffee stout), and Noda Coco Loco. Olde Hickory Lindey Park should also be available soon and would be my top choice if it is.

My favorite porter is Duck Rabbit's Porter. Very traditional, English style porter.

There's also a Bourbon Barrel Aged version of People's Porter out at the moment in a 22 oz bottle.

Minus the limited releases, OH Imperial and FH Peoples Porter are the best 22s.

Another one I haven't heard anyone mention is the Pisgah Vortex II. Very good stout. IMO, right up there with OHIS.

Highland Oatmeal Porter and Green Man Porter are two good ones from Asheville. NoDa Coco Loco is my fave but you won't see it in bottles. People's Porter is a good choice for a bomber as others have mentioned.
