A little heads-up for those planning imminent trip to Peekskill. To me there best beer is Higher Standard, it is not available now. Also, Amazeballs another of their top beers is not on tap. You may want to wait until both of those show up before you head there.

Check here, they are good at keeping this up to date:

    definitely what jrnyc said^
They are out of most of their best beers right now, I'd hold off on a trip up until the new ones are on tap soon. They can't brew anywhere near fast enough to keep up with the demand right now. Although the Crack of Dawn has been my go-to lately... never thought I'd like a black ipa so much that I already tried to brew a clone!

If you are a hop lover definitely wait for Higher Standard, and Amazeballs, all who would venture to Peekskill. Like going to Kane and they are out of Head High and Overhead. OTOH I love Shotgun Willie.

Crack of Dawn is the Toker without the coffee (also my favorite local roaster). I actually like it a bit better than the Toker, both are awesome though.

I also think that Rushing Duck should be on this list, they are doing some really tasty things

why doesn't Peekskill bottle any of their stuff? People keep asking me to send them stuff, but I find shipping growlers (64oz) to be kind of annoying.

With Amazeballs winning a medal at the GABF, or so I heard, something tells me it will be catch it if you can. Same has been the case with Higher Standard. They may be two of the better beers but there are certainly others that will make the trip worthwhile.

Simple answer. Bottling lines cost $$ that they don't have, are not willing to borrow or they're not interested in bottling.

And now for my answer. I agreed with zid. There's no "best brewery" since it's all subjective. My favorite is Peekskill for two reasons...great beer and 15 miles away.

Do they? Genuine question. I've tried more than their IPAs, and thought that the IPA is where they shined. Their reputation certainly seems to be built on all of their IPA-ish brews. I see that they have a rauchbier on at the moment. I would love to try that if it's a great brew.

Peekskill is one of the few breweries in the US that has a coolship, I think Allagash and Hill Farmstead are the only 2 others on the east coast. Their hoppy beers are top notch, but I think they will really come into their own with their wild offerings. Simple Sour, Awesomesauce, and Flavor Saver were all great wilds and they are just getting started. Also they do have a bottling line, although I think it's just unassembled in the basement right now. They don't have the capacity to produce enough beers to bottle, but they do plan on bottling their sours at some point in the future when they open up the top two floors.

    Agreed on Peekskill and Barrier.

Also agreed that if the conversation is best brewery south of HF, then Kane needs to be in the mix (amongst others).

If this question was asked a couple years ago, the overwhelming amount of answers would have been Southampton and Captain Lawrence.....what a difference a couple years make.

I would have said Ommegang then and I'd say the same now.

Haven't had Peeksill but I think I've had everything else mentioned.

And considering what Barrier went through exactly a year ago with Sandy... what a difference a year makes.
