I really like Yuengling lager and Rolling Rock, but what are some other good lighter lager beers In the area?
Any of Victory's lagers are worthy and far preferable to Rolling Rock (though you won't find Rolling Rock's characteristic DMS in anything Victory puts out). Troegs has several awesome brews as well.
Never been to Pennsylvania. I don't care for the Pirates, the Steelers or the Eagles. or the Penguins. or the Phillies. But I have this deep down craving for some Yuengling, or what you guys call Lager. From what is described, it sounds like a truly delicious beer. Yes, I know it's fairly pedestrian, according to BA hype stuff. But even my PA friends that have settled here say it's something to behold. My local likker sto guy has a bottle of it behind the counter and he will not negotiate a price. I want Yuengling Lager! Distribute!
It's good, close to as good as AALs get, but it will not rock your world, I don't think. The green bottles don't help it any, either. Go for cans if you have the option.
Rolling Rock hasn't been made in PA since 2006... I think it's brewed in Jersey now. PA has a bunch of great breweries that are worth checking out: Victory, Troegs, Stoudt's, Weyerbacher, Philadelphia Brewing, Yards, etc. All of them should have at least one lager in their line-ups. I don't know how light you are talking, but Slam Dunkel from Weyerbacher is fantastic, as is Stoudt's Gold Lager and Pilsner.
I'm afraid when you get some you will be wildly disappointed. Yuengling Amber Lager was the first beer I ever tasted that I liked, and that like quickly became love and I drank cases upon cases of the stuff in college. Now I'll have one at a wedding or a restaurant if they don't have anything else but macros, mostly for nostalgia purposes, and the stuff is drinkable but really unremarkable. As much as I will always have a soft spot for Yuengling in my heart, I would never choose to drink one if there was even a slightly better choice (liike Sam Adams lager) available. It's just not that good.
I like Yuengling, I'll still occasionally get a six pack that I enjoy as a nice change up. Its also still my go to for certain occasions such as pairing with intensely hot chicken wings, when I need something thats flavorful but I can essentially chug to calm the heat on the palate.
CheapHysterics couldn't have said it any better. For folks who grew up w/ it, theres a soft spot. But for newbies, there's just too much other better (albeit more expensive) stuff out there
Straub Brewing makes nice AAL beers. The Straub Amber is very similar to Yuengling Lager. I personally prefer Straub American Lager. Some lighter (light in color and light in flavor) craft lagers that I would recommend to you is Sly Fox Helles and Victory Lager (Helles). Cheers!
