Which bottle shops have you tried? There are some great ones on the east side.

Twilight of the idols is probably the best porter I've had but there are lots of good ones listed in this thread. Some that either weren't mentioned or were glossed over a bit were:

    Alpha klaus
    Maui coconut porter
    Jose marti
    Willoughby peanut butter cup porter
    Wolavers Alta gracia

Just Riley's and Steve's Wine Market out on University. Picked up a few bottle at Barriques out on Monroe, but their selections is very limited.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily criticizing Riley's or Steve's--it's just that Madison is eight times the size of Ithaca, and so I imagined bottle shops eight times richer, but in fact, the shop in Ithaca was better stocked, especially in terms of foreign stuff. A pretty huge Belgian section (almost the size of Steve's whole beer selection), a French section (believe it or not), a big German section, a large selection of sours (maybe 20 different brands), etc; and then in the domestic stuff, both sixers and bombers. The great thing about Madison is that beer is cheaper (Rodenbach Grand Cru for $9? That's like $3 cheaper than back in New York). Anyway, if you've got other suggestions....

Ok, sorry to wander so far off topic.

Captain Lawrence Smoked Porter. If you can find any of it aged in brandy barrels, sell a kidney if you have to. After all, it's only the liver you have to worry about.

Edit: Oh wait you said "from" New York. Nevermind. More Captain for me

I do second, or 15th, or whatever we're on now, Edmund Fitzgerald. And if you happen to make your way to D.C. at all, there's a place called Kramerbooks that, first of all, rocks, and second of all, has it on tap, and it pairs perfectly with their salted caramel vanilla cake.

Sam Adams Maple Pecan Porter is awesome. Honestly, my expectations weren't too high, but after giving it a fair shake, I was more than impressed.

As all stouts are de facto Porters it's worth looking at these too.
Fuller's Black Cab Stout is decent for its low strength.

I tried this beer over the weekend. You're right, very underrated and extremely delicious. I was pleasantly surprised. Since you're in Mass I'll mention that I think White Birch's Humble Porter is pretty fantastic as well.

Another one for Edmound Ftiz and Fuller's London Porter. That aside, being in WI and having ample easy access to New Glarus should give you plenty of trade ammunition should you want anything else.

If you aren't opposed to trying barrel aged Porters I would strongly recommend Arcadia Ales Shipwreck Porter. Aged for 20 months in 22 year bourbon barrels.
