Everett is the best porter in existence, period! But since you're nowhere near VT, you should get your hands on Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald and Founders Porter. Both excellent representations of the style! Not sure if Ballast Point distributes there, but if so Victory At Sea is my second favorite behind Everett.

Yeah, I've been leery of Founders: seems like they do the typical American-"hop everything"-beer approach; couldn't stand their Scotch ale for this reason. But, what the heck, I'll give it a try. Also not really into the imperial porters for the same reason: for some reason lots of US brewers tend to either go wild with hops or alcohol. That said, I HVAE had some outstanding big porters: Maine Beer Co's Titus, for example, or the Dechuttes anniversary, barrel aged, imperial one.

I'll see if my buddy in VT can get me an Everett's

According to my BA ratings, I really liked:

    Mad River Steelhead Scotch Porter
Pensacola Bay Brewery Black Treasure (limited brew I had at the brewery - not bottled)
    Bell's Porter
Ballast Point Victory at Sea Coffee Vanilla Imperial Porter
Deschuttes Black Butte XX and XXIII
    Ballast Point Black Marlin Porter
The Brewhouse Harry Porter (a brewpub in Santa Barbara)
    Avery New World Porter
    Firestone Walker Walker's Reserve
    Sierra Nevada Porter

honorable mention to Stone Smoked Porter with American Oak, which I had on cask once.

For an English porter, my favorite is the original flag porter. Taddy and Fullers are excellent at well.

Mayflower is the correct answer to this thread. I guess it comes down to personal preference but they put in just a hint of peat smoked malt that adds a great degree of complexity without becoming cloying. It replaced Fuller's as my #1 porter. It's that good.

EDIT: Founders is in the conversation too. Maybe I overrated it because it's all I had to drink during Hurricane Sandy in NJ with no power for 16 days.

Founders is my favorite. But here's a few from Madison that are very nice.
    Opie from Next Door Brewing
    Nightcall from Karben4
    Contorter porter from Ale Asylum
O,so brewing in Plover also has a nice porter called Night train.

Samuel Smith's Taddy is THE best. That said, definitely try Fuller's London Porter.
