Just starting to get into this style more and am really digging Founders Dirty Bastard and Bellhaven Wee Heavy. Also, absoloultely love CW BB Scotch Ale.

What are the best Scotch Ales/Wee Heavys....either barrel aged or not.

One of my favorite styles of beer...

    Oskar Blues Old Chub
    Founders Dirty Bastard
    Big Eddy Wee Heavy
    Dark Horse Scotty Karate

    Tyranena Shagging in the Woods
    Central Waters BBSA

There are others, but the first four are the ones that I will continually buy. I haven't had Backwoods Bastard, but will try it sometime.

Mc Ewan's is back, baby! And definitely worthy of consideration.

I like Backwoods with a couple of months on it, but I think Scotty Karate beats it.

Of the few I have tried, my favorite has been Grimm Brothers Barrel Aged (Brett) Wee Heavy, a local and on tap only offering from this past winter.

Did they recently reformulate or something? Tried it years ago and just remember it being oxidized.

Yeah... I'm most interested in traditional takes on the style over barrel aged.

It hasn't been distributed in 5 years or so, and recently made a reappearance.

I'd give it a few more years to sit on the shelves if you want it oxidized this time around - otherwise, it's tasting really good these days; rich and toffee-like, without being overly sweet, and with enough complexity to keep things interesting.

I nearly forgot about that one- just a fantastic beer. Let's definitely bring it one out of retirement! I remember enjoying the other Caledonian brews as well.
