Alright guys and gals, to piggyback the "best ipa brewed on Long Island" thread I'd like to get your take on the best stout coming out of Long Island and why. I won't generalize the type of stout as far as R.I.S, American Double, Milk, Oatmeal etc., it can be any type of stout(no porters). It must be brewed by one of Long Island's breweries (I know your home brew stout is by far the best) but can also be a collaboration (example: Great South Bay Pro-am series) and does not have to be bottled. If you can give some insight on where to pick it up and when it's generally available that would be awesome.

I've gone through and listed most of the stouts I could think of and what's archived here on Beer Advocate from our Long Island Breweries. If you can think of any stout offerings from places like St. James brewing, Square Head, Ghost Cat Brewing, Brewers Collective etc. please do so. If you would like to chime in on additional beers not listed or ones from brewpubs like John Harvards, Black forest or Brick House Brewery please feel free to do so.

Far and away the best stout brewed on Long Island, is the Southampton Imperial Russian Stout. There is nothing else that is even comparable.

I agree that Southampton is incredible. However, in the end, it's "just" a really good imperial stout. The low bottle count/rare status of it makes it a slight turn off for me.

I agree @dar482... I feel SH RIS recieves a lot of acclaim due it's low bottle count. Lots of other stouts above recieve higher ratings but ratings is not the be all end all. Would love to know if some BA's had a tasting with multiple L.I. stouts as I feel SH is not far and above better than some of the stouts listed above.

I have not had SH but of the ones I have drank, I would rank them like so...

    Apple Brandy Dirty Deeds
    Famous Last Words
    Dirty Deeds
    McLaughlin's Folly
    Morticia
    Snozberry Stout
    Black Friday
    Boris The Spider
    MooChelle
    Guardsman
    Long Island Potato Stout
    Starboard Oatmeal Stout

The others that I've tried while delicious and drinkable have been average or slightly above.

I've only had four or five of these, and of those none even was good enough to stay in memory other than the SH, which was very good, but not spectacular. Certainly would love to try them all however

Out of the stouts i've gotten my hands on..my favorites
    In no particular order are:

    Famous Last Words
    Barrier Lights Out
    Barrier Jamaican Me Coconuts
    Dirty Deeds

FLW was so full of flavor and I love the touch of molasses which led to this big vanilla flavor.

Lights Out is full of the roastiness one expects in a nice stout. Very nice cold weather beer. It is also readily available.

Jamaican Me Coconuts is a very unique and complex beer.

Dirty Deeds is just damn good! First time I had this at the Coliseum beer fest I basically couldn't stop jumping back on the line to get more. Must have spent 30-45 mins alone at the GSB tent (yes, I always waited my turn)

edit: forgot about Barrier Morticia. I hope they bottle it again.

I like Spider Bite Boris and GSB Velvet Hot Tub. The Blue Point Oatmeal Stout is also solid (especially on tap). The Barrage Coffee Hazelnut Stout was sublime, but I think they haven't made it again.

When I was at Barrier a few weeks ago I specifically asked about Morticia. He said when they sampled it, it was way hoppier than they wanted so they are waiting for the hops to mellow. Iirc, he said late fall/winter. I know last year's Morticia was released in April/May.

Out of all those listed I have only had 3 (Barrier Lights Out and Maison Premiere and Blue Point (Sour) Cherry Imperial Stour) and out of those 3 Lights Out was by far the best. I do have a bottle of Barrier Morticia sitting for over a year now that I need to get into.

Apple brandy dirty deeds wins this easily in my book. If Southampton would barrel age their IRS it would probably be incredible. Also Hoping for the day when I can actually taste maple in morticia

Another vote for Barrage Famous Last Words but I definitely give a consolation prize to Long Ireland Black Friday. I had it on tap and was a fan.
