Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout. It is traditional, balanced for the type, great tasting and readily available. My little deck outdoors feels like a pub every evening I have one.

Their Oatmeal Stout is excellent, but the best smelling beer in the world is their Organic Chocolate Stout. In a blind smelling test nobody would guess it is a beer or anything other than pure cocoa. Taste is good but nowhere like the smell.

Are we really 5 pages into this thread with no mention of Fundamental Observation?!?!? It's one of the few beers that actually lived up to the hype for me. I liked it more than Vanilla Rye, SR-71 and Assassin. Don't get me wrong, they are all phenomenal beers, but FO is ridiculously good.....and I almost don't want to mention it because I like the fact that it's under the radar right now but Leche Borracho is a phenomenal BA Mexican style stout.

Anyway, my top stouts would be:

    Fundamental Observation
    Double Barrel Mexican Cake
    Leche Borracho
    Assassin
    SR-71
    Vanilla Rye
    Tokyo Rising Sun
    Snowed In
    Momi Hiwa (porter)

and as far as easily obtainable stout (meaning you don't have to trade an arm and a leg to land these)

    Last Rites
    BCBS
    Big Bad Baptist
    Foolery
    BA Ginger Bread Stout
    Grey Monday
    Chocolate Rain
    Melange 3
    Black Tokyo Horizon
    BA Chocwork Orange (porter)
    Wide Awake, it's morning (porter)
    Abraxas
    Hunaphu
    Pugachevs Cobra
    Rare Dos
    BA Darkness
    BBA Plead the 5th
    No Rules (porter)

@GabberGod real solid lists! I have a bunch of these in my cellar, so glad you mentioned them. Have a few harder to get bottles on the way, so excited to try share them with friends.

There ya go! Consistently rated the best beer from Wyoming. I wonder if that will change now that Melvin is around and brewing awesome hop forward beers...

I love them all !! I have a case of KBS, 16 Breakfast stouts, 4 different Yeti's, 1 4 pack of Siberian Nights, 1 Big Bad Baptist, a couple Of Evil Twin Jesus variants, 5 Bourbon County regulars, 1 Mephisto, and assorted high test Averies in my basement. My wallet thinks my hand is crazy. Oh..... if you are a stout fan try Labyrinth and some Jacks Abbey porters. They are great. The Labyrinth is a real sleeper. Super delicious. Today is day 2 of my vacations and it is going to be Framinghammer vanilla porter and Evil Twin Even More Jesus while I smoke the chicken thighs. Then it is nap time :grinning::grinning::grinning::grinning::grinning:

Regular Boris because it's always available where I lived in Ohio, was reasonably priced, delicious, and ready to drink regardless of it's age. In my opinion it was the best local year around stout available in NE Ohio.

I like their stouts, but not a bomber fan, particularly high ABV. I can see companies putting out special, one-off, or trial runs in bomber - but once it catches on then why not sell it in 12oz?

I don't know what that is but if it says stout on the bottle then it is a porter, albeit a slightly thick one, perhaps.

lot of excellent ones ... for the best barrel aged I gotta say Mocha Wednesday, KBS & The Abyss. The best non barrel aged stout Ive tried is Lawson's Fayston Coffee stout. honorable mention to Dusk trill Dawn, Hawaiian speedway stout, BCBS, and Bomb! also still have a bottle of Dark Lord that I need to try.
