I just bought a beverage air kegerator model bm23 off of craigslist. The unit is working but I don't have any kegs in it but for now I'm storing bottles of beer in it until I keg my next batch of beer. The thermostat is set to the coldest it can be. I took a bottle of beer straight from the kegerator and measured the temperature of the beer which turned out to be 51 degrees. What could be the problem??
Could be an array of things. How old is this unit? Is it black or woodgrain finish ? To biggest things it could be is either the unit is so old and low on charge stemming from a leak some where. Could be a bad thermostat. Does compressor run nonstop? On the lighter side could be a frozen coil. Look inside unit where fan is blowing look to see if coil frozen over. Could be a bad door seal( which usually make coil freeze over too) Best way to test is use a 5 gal bucket of water and let sit for 24hr( without opening door) and test your water temp with a good thermometer. You want at least 38F and with thermostat cranked to 9 it should be below that .
that right there is the problem. like zero said, could be a lot of things. and any one of them will require some time and money. decide if you got hosed and see if the seller will take it back. there are tons of bm23 units around. a lot of these things sit in a garage or fire hall forever until they finally get tossed. when you say the unit is working, well, not really... a guy sold you a refrigerator that doesn't refrigerate. i'd cut my losses and try to get my money back. just one guys advice. Cheers.
If seals check out, coil not frozen up.and thermostat is cranked up(Assuming at 9 not 1) you could jump out thermostat to bypass. If it gets real cold from there you know tstat is shot. Also I'm assuming fan inside unit is running too?It should run 24/7.Last thing I forgot to throw in there is the condenser (down by compressor) Is it clogged up with dust and dirt? That will make the unit run hot. Last ditch would be if you know a refrigeration guy that could hook gauges up to and test refrigerant levels for you.On the plus side if its not an antique is these units are repairable.Any commercial refrigeration guy can work on these units and all parts are available(or can be retrofitted) Just don't see it paying if its Real old( Woodgrain finish) to have recharged or if leak in evaporator.
I remember you looking into these unit while back. Don't let this leave a bad taste in your mouth for these units.Good units.(usually)
Well I know nothing about refrigerators so I don't know what I'd be looking for. I could call bev air and maybe they'd be able to walk me through some troubleshooting. Besides this problem I love my bev air! Just hope it's an inexpensive fix being that I spent 400$ for the unit.
I hear a fan kick on but it's not on 24/7. I'm not sure how old the unit is either. I am out of town right now so I'll take a look at the unit as soon as I get back.
Is the unit black vinyl or woodgrain? the inside fan should always run..If not that is a problem right there.Fan by compressor will kick on with compressor...
The unit is black vinyl. I'm get home from Michigan back to Indiana tomorrow. I'll have to check on the fan situation.
Yes sir. Had my awesome neighbor look at it. Condenser fan is not moving at all on the inside of the unit. He's going to see if he has the part in stock or he may have to order it. Things are looking good. Should be an inexpensive fix and for that I am very thankful.
Yeah that motor is only $44.23 from Partstown. http://www.partstown.com/beverage_air/bev501-137b;sid=lr6EWKDJkPaBWPJOPpexVggJU4rewQYt-R0=
Oh just an after thought. Motor inside the unit is the evaporator motor. Condenser is down by compressor...
Thanks for the correction. Your right it is the evaporated motor! My bad. Still don't have it fixed yet. Hoping the part comes tomorrow.
I will! I home brewed for the first time last week and my pumpkin ale turned out pretty well. The only problem is that is a bit over carbonated. I'm looking forward to putting my next home brew in the keg. I'm going to brew a holiday brew for my next batch.
