Any hidden gems around this area? Looking to drive a max of 15-20 mins I guess, but regardless throw out the options if any. Thanks and Cheers!
bogies beer in beverly (good beer store) gulugulu cafe in salem (good tap list usually) amesbury ale house, grille next door (a little further away) Triillium...just go there
I second most of the suggestions above. Gulu Gulu--- really good food and fantastic tap and bottle selection, all at reasonable prices. Funky, cafe atmosphere. Best food and craft beer spot on North Shore. A real gem! Vinnin in Swampscott has best selection of any bottle shop on North Shore and cheapest prices anywhere. A hidden gem! Yummy food at Jack Tar--solid craft beers on tap, smaller beer selection than Gulu. Bogie's is small but good selection, right in Beverly, most convenient for you, definitely worth checking out. Free tastings Thursday nights.
Seems like a good topic to ask. What's up with Harrigan's chain of stores? (Three, I think). They're SO GROSSLY overpriced - liquor, wine, beer - it is truly a marvel how they stay in business.
I met the self proclaimed owner of Harrigan's in Hamilton back a couple months ago. Not sure if he really was or not. He was bragging about how he found 3 bottles of Pappy in Maine on a trip to his Cabin at a small shop that sold them face value (12yr, 15yr, and 20 yr, I believe) He proceeded to say that the owner of that shop was an idiot for selling face value and now he was selling them for $500, $700, and $1000 and he already had some wealthy Hamiltonites lined up to buy. Needless to say, I didn't buy anything and never returned. I know he's free to make money with his good fortune, but that didn't sit well with me.
I'm not surprised he would say that. Judging by their prices. 21st Amendment Bitter American 6pk was priced $16. Yes It's about 80%+ mark up. Pretty much every single bottle of liquor was 10-15$ over what it costs everywhere else. It's funny you mention this Van Winkle story. It's actually illegal for him to sell liquor bought at some other store and out of state to boot. Probably several violations there. It's pretty dumb of him to brag about it. As for people lining up to buy it - this picture was taken last Saturday at Beverly store But, unfortunately, at some point somebody will buy it.
Bogie's has a great selection for a little store. Fair prices and typically no old beers on the shelf. For draft beer Gulu Gulu is a fun bar with a great selection. I call it a coffee shop with beer and cocktails. Flying Saucer Pizza next door is run by the same owner as Gulu. Good pizza and beer list. Often there are beers on tap here that aren't on at Gulu. Naumkeag Ordinary next to Flying Saucer has great food and a descent beer list. If you looking for a burger or hot meal (that's not pizza) go here. In Beverly the Wild Horse Cafe has a descent beer selection. Good food too, but pricey. Stay on the bar side and get a burger or nachos and you'll save some money. Downtown there are a bunch of fancy restaurants with descent beers. Soma and the Barrel House are great. The Barrel House recently had Bourbon County Stout on tap. Again, these are pricey restaurants with great food, but they do offer burgers and apps for a reasonable price. The Indo is a small bar with descent pub food and an OK beer selection. Good place to hang out with friends.
I agree! To throw it into perspective every 30 rack is sold for exactly 30$ Which is highway robbery if you ask me.
Thanks everyone for the awesome suggestions! Now I have a good starting point from my apartment in Beverly.
Both Kappy's on 114 will surprise you from time to time, my preference is the one across from McDs. Fair prices too boot.
Should you find yourself in downtown Salem check out Quality Liquors. Around the holidays they'll put out some goodies out that they've been cellaring throughout the year. Picked up a Parabola last year.
Make sure you like Bogie's, Quality Liquors, Depot Liquors, etc. on FB and get posts to your phone. They always post the rare ones.
