Right now I'm doing my first BIAB, and my bag teared during the mash. I didn't realize how much grain got out until I started to bring the wort to a boil and a bunch made it's way to the top. I tried to scoop out most of it, but theres still a lot in solution. I would estimate .25lb of grain is in it total. Is this going to ruin the batch? I know that grains release tannins at higher temperatures. I'm making a pseudoSue clone with a bunch of Citra hops, so I don't want to waste $25 of hops if this batch isn't going to work out.. Thanks in advance for the help.
You'll have less than ideal results, but there's no exact cut off of how much grain in the boil will ruin your batch. Every bit will impart some tannins, but it's damn near impossible to have zero husk in the boil. How much grain it takes to impart a noticeable negative effect will be largely personal preference and perception. TL;DR - YMMV.
There seems to be a lot of worry with boiling grains, but this is just a decoction. This might not be ideal for certain grains, but you should proceed to ferment and go by taste. See how it goes.
Thanks guys. I ended up following my hopping schedule and it is now in the fermentation chamber. I'll follow up in a few weeks.
Were you able to strain grain from the wort or leave it behind in your brew pot? Since your grain amount is not much, it's not any big deal if you didn't, but I am just curious if it ended up being about the amount that you thought it would be.
I left some of it in the brew pot, but some I put in the fermentor. I would estimate it a bit higher than my .25lb amount, perhaps .5-.75lb. Not too sure.
