Creating a new thread in which to post up your favorite German Bier-cations. Feel free to add your trip pix, bier reports, travel tips etc to it.

This can be a resource for anyone looking for some good travel info and good bier here in Germany.

    Miltenberg
    Faust Brewery

We discovered Miltenberg by chance when @MattRiggs invited the BAs in Germany to visit Faust Brewery where he was working at the time. Matt was offering an English tour of the brewery and a chance to sample some of the goods produced there. So, I talked to my wife and she booked us a hotel and away we went!

Miltenberg is situated on the southern side of the River Maine in Bavaria between Aschaffenburg and Wertheim. It is a quintessential small German town with castle ruins on the hill above it and lots of half timbered buildings.

We stayed in the Schmuckkästchen-Hotel & Café (the half-timbered house with red beams in the photo below) which, I believe dates from the 1500's. This fact wasn't that thrilling for us though - since our house what built in 1463. However, it was a very nice place, clean, and the breakfast was divine! We highly recommend this place. Oh, it's a 3-4 min walk from Faust Brewey and the Faust Biergarten!

Looking for something to eat? The Faust Biergarten has a good menu, but our go-to favorite is the The Saigon Deli located along the river. The Pad Thai is simply the best there is anywhere.

If you are looking for something to do after touring the brewery and walking the streets and hills around the town, you can book a 1 hr river cruise on the Maine - inexpensive.

Once you have fully toured Miltenberg, make the short drive to Wertheim stopping along the way to visit the castle ruins above the towns of Freudenberg, Henneburg and Wertheim.

    Freudenberg

They held women in this tower before burning them as witches...

Henneburg (mit Biergarten and a small restaurant - the young guy who owns it is very nice)

Wertheim (entry fee: 1 €, what a bargain!)

Many, many things are done very well.. and there are somethings that need that could use much improvement.

It's certainly great living here - for now.

Compared with my current scenery, I'd chance it. :grinning:

I'm sure you could find a castle in Illinois if you looked hard enough.

Best of both worlds - keep buying lottery tickets with the hope of having homes in Germany and the US. That's what I'm shooting for :stuck_out_tongue:

If that were to happen, we'd move to New Zealand - we loved that country!

Thinking more of the gorgeous river valley, but most of the Illinois castles are very English in influence. :grinning:

Thanks, N8. This is one of the reasons I have a German holiday (or two) a year. For me it's several birds with one stone... one of them being Germany's medieval magic. Some Mittelalterlichen Städten are just heart-stoppingly gorgeous!

It just happens that I already have plans for Miltenberg this christmas. Like your Frau, I'm a meticulous planner so I start my research and bookings early.

Maybe more stuff later... For now here are some photos of my "Gose tour" from a few years back. (02:11 min long)

I was going to post up a bike riding venture that we did from Stuttgart to Marbach am Neckar...

But then I realized it was nothing but a 25 km biergarten crawl :astonished:

That's what happens when there's a biergarten every 3-5 km along the bike path.

I feel like I should be contributing to this thread, but I have always posted trip reports so I feel I'm already on the record with my Bier-cations. So instead here a picture of Dresden.

Dresden is very pretty, very photogenic. Someone with a better camera and better skills than I could come home with some pretty nice pictures.

We were only there for an overnight, I wish we had more time to explore. Full disclosure: Die Frau thought it was OK but I don't think she liked it as much as I did.

The beers are standard in Dinkelsbühl, however, it is such a gorgeous little town (a miniature Rothenburg), and is proud of its carp.
