I have watched several BIFs prior to joing a few of them over the past year and the concept is great, and there can be lots of fun for the participants. With that being said, there are always minimum requirements, and typically people chose to go above and beyond just becasue they want to. When joining a BIF, I only expect to see the minimum to not be disappointed if my box received was a "lesser box" than what I sent out or what others had received. I have not been a victim of a "sub par" box, but I have seen it in both BIFs I participated in, and have followed. Is there some sort of etiquette for addressing someone who has not met the minimum requirements, ships way late, not at all, etc? Should the organizer of the BIF reach out and message particular people who do not adhere to the rules? I am just curious what experiences people have had out there, what is acceptable, and what should be just left alone. I do know sometimes people do not give a darn and just say what they want anyway. I appreciate the feedback!

It sort of depends on how the box is sub-par. If you just got the "worst" box in the BIF (knowing that "worst" is subjective here) but it met or exceeded the rules, and the sender did actually try to send a good box, then I think you just post your haul, say "thanks", and know that you can't win 'em all. If you got a box that didn't actually meet the BIF rules or was clearly poorly executed (for instance filled with old IPAs, beers you've given negative reviews to, etc) then you should bring it up with the organizer.

Depending on the beers in the box, whether its a local shelf turd( has happened to a friend a couple times recently) or just poorly selected ( old IPA). For the box of beer received you could go pick up at your local bottle shop ( shelf turd) if the style is ageable I will hold on to it until I have another box going out that needs some space filled in. Or share that beer with friends ( the kind that always drink your beer but don't want to pick some up themselves. The bad beers I have gotten that are old IPA's I will either cook with them or give them to my 21 year old brother. Those are the beers you just find something to do with them fast. Maybe let the sender know that the IPA is old and tell them you wanted to make sure if they have more of it to drink it right away.

Don't stuff your target can get on the shelves whenever he wants. Ever.

There is a long multi page thread in this forum about a multiple offender that has left or changed his name.

No, no, no... not what I meant. Was trying to get the meaning across that BIF's aren't always about winning a box full of whales. There are also "Locals BIF's" where you send your favorite locals that your target cannot get in their area. Less pressure, less butt hurt, more enjoyable (IMHO).

I'm like 95% sure the guy you responded to meant the thing I said. There's obviously nothing wrong with sending shelf beers in the vast majority of BIFs (hell, even in whale BIFs they're often sent as extras), but sending shelf beers your target can get is douche-tastic.

No what I was meaning by local shelf turds is if you are sending to me ( hypothetical) and you send a box full of stuff I can run to total wine and get myself. Not your locals. I love other people's locals whether its good or not. At least I got to try it.
