I like the way this is heading and I would be interested also.

I like this idea too and it may be a good first BIF for me I would suggest to even keep it more simple just say 2 gems and at least a 6 pack of local or whatever can fit in a FedEx Med Box...of course overachievers could do the large box. This would be a simple relatively quick BIF as everyone could get these items in one short trip. If growlers are sent maybe the 32oz version I have a few great options here that would make any beer fan quite happy. I am in south Florida so the local option makes me excited to send some local stuff I really enjoy and thing others would as well the scene is getting much better here.

It seems this is gathering steam. How about everyone commits to a 12 bottle shipper. 3 "Gems" (94+ Brewery Only/Limited Release) and filling out the shipper with locals?

I would be willing and interested in doing this. Texas has some great things going right now.

^^Seem like solid parameters to me.

OP, if you are going to be organizing this one, I would set a lock-in date and fully expound upon the details. I've never done a BIF before so I'm not 100% sure how the structure actually works.

Interesting, but I don't think you could choose what you are going to receive. That would be pure luck. Some parameters like $50 worth of locals, gems, growlers, etc. Some sort of leveling the playing field. Better beer saves on some shipping, but may be harder to find.
    or the idea by JGlitz
12 bottle shipper with 3 brewery only, rest locals sounds like fun... It would tame it down to 85+ or 90+, and maybe up the brewery only 3 barrel aged or otherwise very limited, and 3 brewery only?

So the issue with all of the above is the issue with managing expectations around the idea of "Gems" because what is a gem to one does not make a gem to another. Also the rating is a good but not great way to do this. Founders Breakfast Stout or Old Raspy are high BA scores, as the should be, but that doesn't make them "gems".

My idea was to dump a bunch of good beers on someone in return for a beer or three. And when I mean dump I mean DUMP on someone.

If we switch this up, it doesn't help me get rid of any of the pile of beer I have collected in the last few months. And we all know that this is all about me.

I've run a BIF before were I tried very tight rules of how you get beers and what rating beers should be sent and it went very well, with the exception of a couple people who were left feeling slighted.

We can work on something though if there is interest.

I would stick two 3 very limited/brewery only, 3 regional hard to get, 6 dealers choice/locals/great beer NOT available to your target.

Ratings minimums can be added. Use the internet to make sure that your target doesn't have access to said beer.

I'd be up for something along these lines. I really like the idea of limiting it to a 12-bottle shipper, with a specific mix of bottles (3/3/6 brewery-only/hard-to-get/other-not-avail) and rating minimums – keeps the shipping cost reasonable while maintaining high quality to ensure it's worth doing.

This sounds great to me, would definitely be down.

Just a thought but what but if it was a 2 stage BIF?

Stage 1: this would be the quantity shippers sending to the quality group and their hauls posted.

Stage 2: Once the quality group get their box they determine what quality beers they are sending out.

It could be a "pairs" type bif where the targets are matched or a random mix but each quality sender would be able to base thier box on the hauls posted.

None of the beers from either side should be readily available shelf beers IMO. The quantity side shouldn't just be running out and grabbing a bunch of beer to ship out in order to get some "gems" back. I see this type of BIF as a way to help some people build a "cellar" while helping others reduce their own cellar.

Just trying to help out. Feel free to ignore everything I said.

The two part BIF it seems would go one of two ways and probably a little BIF of both. some would get their box and love it and destroy to "one up" while another group could get their box and feel "let down" compared to others and in return send a box that may not be as good.

It looks like if we did the original idea it wouldn't work because most people wanted to receive quality which I get a I wanted to unload as well.

I'm going to think about this one and come up with some sort of compromise.

I could see one or both of the above being an issue with a two-round BIF. A single round with more tightly-defined contents seems much likelier to result in happy participants.

The one upping of others to bomb porches and destroy others is going to happen in every BIF and in some ways is hurting BIFs in general (my opinion of course). If the parameters are set ahead of time I dont see there being many issues with a two stage BIF. As long as people aren't running out and grabbing a couple of mixed twelve packs in hopes of getting semi-whales in return people shouldn't get upset. As long as quality is defined as x beer/rating or better people getting quality boxes wouldn't be able to get upset either.

I really like the idea and wouldn't mind sending a quality box but I am trying to empty my cellar not get a bigger stash to consume/store/move around.
