Hey Guys I live in NC and my 40th is 10/25 and I'm looking for a great beer destinations other than anywhere in NC or SC. We would like to go somewhere for two or three days in driving distance for great breweries and beer bars. Any suggestions?
Richmond probably has the best scene if you're into IPAs, between the hyper-local (Veil/Triple Crossing/Answer/Final Gravity), VA-only (Hardywood), and international (Stone). Good restaurant/bar scene, easy enough to waste some time exploring (especially if you're interested in the Civil War or outdoors activities), and easy day-trips from there to the Blue Ridge Mts or DC. The Atlanta/Athens scene in GA has come a long way as well, depending on where you are in NC. I haven't made the trip, but breweries like Creature Comforts, Scofflaw, and Orpheus all have outsized reputations.
Thanks PaleCale, I'm Thinking VA is where we will go, I know Veil is killing it, your other recommendations sound great as well
You could do worse than spend a day/night combo in Athens/Decatur on your way to the Tampa Bay area. Nashville also is a lot of fun. Would second RVA ... though at this time of year, I’d want to amble west toward the mountains.
If it were me I would go to Tampa area. You'd be hard pressed to find that many great breweries so close anywhere else.
Richmond for sure: The Veil Answer Brewpub Triple Crossing Hardywood Final Gravity Lickinghole Creek (like 40 min away) On the east coast, its hard to find better quality of beer overall than RVA
Richmond. Tampa. NYC. Boston. Vermont/Maine. All great. I'd pick based on whether you are interested in beaches, warm/cold weather, small/big city, urban/rural, short/long drive. NYC and Boston have amazing bars as well as breweries.
What are you interested in other than drinking? I like Tampa just because you can hit the beaches during the day and come back and drink around town in the evenings. If beaches and warmer weather aren't your thing, I'd take the weekend to somewhere like Charlottesville, mainly because I like options to do shit in the mountains and enjoy the college "scenery".
