I visited Big Alice back in December and was fairly unimpressed. The brews were adventurous and all sounded delicious, but they all tasted a bit lackluster and of homebrewer quality. I notice they're having an anniversary party on Sunday with 9 beers, 2 casks, a Randalled beer, shandies and BBQ. It all sounds great, but could be a big bust.

What's the feeling from NYC folk? Have things improved? Could some of these beers be gems?

I was there for the first time on Saturday after the OH can release, and I really enjoyed their beer. They're not doing radical sours or intensely hopped IPAs; their wheelhouse is basic hops with creative uses of malts and additives. The Salt and Pepper Black Saison and Gunpowder Tea Rye were really, really good. And John and Corey couldn't be nicer.

Don't see how BBQ and decent to good beers could be a " big bust." Go, why not?

No, I agree that the creativity of the beers and the fact their pumping stuff out besides IPAs is a plus. I just wasn't blown away by the execution. I do agree the folks there are beyond friendly and welcoming.

For one thing, because Big Alice is definitely a trek to get to. Also, the point of my post is to get some idea of whether the beers are any better. And the BBQ, no guarantees that will be good.

Big Alice is easy to get to, it's like a 5-minute walk from the subway. Long Island City is one of the easier Queens 'hoods to travel to (from Manhattan)

Really? Hmm. I cabbed it there from Singlecut and from there went on to Rockaway and then Alewife and Transmitter. Seemed like a good 30 minute walk from BA to Alewife which is where (I believe) the closest subway is.

I'll have to do some research on that front.

Either way, I'm coming from Washington Heights, so it's still a trek. haha

no there's an E/M stop not far away over on Court Square. Singlecut is super far away though, that's about as far away as you can get and still be in Queens
    well yeah, that's pretty far
