Are all (#1-13) the Big Bad Baptists barrel aged? Couldn't find this info on here, and Epic's website makes the series sound really confusing (like barrel-aging is a special treatment for only certain batches). If they are BA, are they aged in whiskey barrels or bourbon or both?
They are aged in barrels that previously contained Booby Leach after his successful plunge over Niagra Falls
It's confusing alright. I went to Epic's website and descriptions are not consistent. I'm guessing here, but I think they are all barrel aged because it would be odd to change such a critical component of a beer yet keep the same beer name. It looks like for a definitive answer, you'll need to contact the brewery though.
It can be confusing, but for each batch they use different coffee and a different combination of different barrels. The ABV has also gone way up and down from batch to batch. Some are whiskey and bourbon, some bourbon, some whiskey and there have been a variety of coffees used. Hope this helps a little! Love me some Big Bad Baptist! Wish it hit Ohio more frequently.
I've had a lot of Big Bad Baptist and noticed the same thing. No mention of the barrels used in the later versions. I'd be curious to know what they used. Regardless, it's excellent. Edit: the bottles I always have say aged in whiskey barrels,
I've had batch 13 and the bottle says whiskey barrel aged. As for the taste, the barrel aging doesn't jump out as much as most of the barrel aged stouts I've tried (KBS, BCBS, Parabola, etc) but it's there. The coffee dominated the bottle I tried and I thought it was really tasty for 13 bucks.
