Hi guys, I am brewing right now and made a mistake while fly sparging.I started sparging without checking water sparge temp(first time in my homebrewing life), when I realized this there were already 2-3 qts. of runnings in my boiling tun, so I stopped it and checked sparge water temp. ,it was 180 F, then I used ice to low it down to 168 F and continue sparging. My concern is getting astringency in this beer, what do you think?

    Many greetings

    Tebuken

My guess is that with such a small amount of hot water, you'll be fine. Especially if your pH was not particularly high.

That early in the sparge your pH should still be out of range for extracting tannins. Tannin extraction is a combo of temp and pH and to a lesser degree low gravity.

Esteban, since so little water was involved and you had a low pH I highly suspect that your beer will be just fine.

    Cheers!

You´r right, I have forgotten that, otherwise it would not be possible to make decoctions, thank you .

I batch sparge and I just accidentally sparged with 150 F water. I also got 58% eff. (Normally get ~70%). Do you all think the low temp sparge was the cause?

Heat should help some with extraction efficiency
, but I usually attribute this sizable shift in efficiency to crush issues

I think it's unlikely that the change in viscosity of the wort caused that much of an efficiency difference by itself.

    Unlikely.

I batch sparge with 2 gal of boiling water and second batch sparge with 3 gal of water that's about 170F

Now Tebuken's fly sparging may not have caused all this, but it does make you think. :grimacing:

@TastyAdventure the temp alone shouldn't drop you 12% eff, maybe a few%, but not that much. That drop could be crush, too low or too high pH, channeling (if fly spare) not mixing well (batch spare), or combinations of any of the above. I've also heard that using Munich as the bulk of your base can effect eff as the yield is typically lower than expected.

Now I recall I did not run a portion of the grain through the mil a SECOND time. I usually run about 1/3 of the grain through my LHBS mill a second time.... Damn.

If I had it all over to do again, I'd probably get into some simple fly sparging. As it stands, I haven't broken my cooler and haven't gone to a tier system with keggles. I hope I never get that invested.

Well I haven't broken my cooler either. Had to replace an O-ring once, but that's no biggie. If it were electronic like a computer I'm sure I would have given it "flying lessons" by now.

If I ever break my cooler I am going to fix it and keep going as normal. I love my batch sparging and cooler system.
