Not liking sours when a friend shared his bottle of Deviation. Wish my tastes were developed back then so I could have gained a fuller appreciation.

Really? I knew they were spontaneously fermented, but figured it was a different wild yeast. I don't get the same flavor/ taste that I do from American beers that have Brett. The American ones are much more harsh. I have since taken a liking to American Wilds though...

It isn't the only yeast used. Open fermentation gets whatever is in the air, so there are probably several yeasts and even some bacteria.

When I first got into beer I went out and bought a few cases of stuff I liked (a lot of Leinies, mainly, but other pretty mediocre beer) and also bought stuff that I thought my gf liked (hard cider) in bulk. Our tastes evolved very quickly, and I was stuck with about 50+ bottles of beer/hard cider that we no longer wanted. Fortunately I have a friend who, while appreciating high quality beer, can tolerate and enjoy mostly anything.

You need to take that left over cider and whip up some apple jack! Freeze distilled nectar of the gods!

Mine was probably last year (or maybe the year before last).

I went to Total Wine, and they had like 4 or 5 bottles of Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus on the shelf and I completely spaced, because I wasn't into sours yet.

Probably never going to see that happen again.

    Still kicking myself.

Pretty sure thats all sediment from the beer you saw, my buddys looked the same the bottle was very dark blue until we rinsed it out and realized it was coated in sediment, btw, glass isn't "lined" with anything, its just glass.

Before I got into craft beer, I had traveled all around the United States for work. I was in the same town, or only a few miles away, from incredible breweries such as Russian River, Firestone Walker, Cigar City, Hill Farmstead, Brooklyn, and so many others.

And what did I do? I pissed all that time and opportunity away going to the nearest dive bar and pounding swill beer until got faded. I wish I would've got into craft earlier. Now I'm at corporate HQ and don't travel, and those opportunities are basically gone. I couldn't be more disappointed in myself, looking back.

You had to be around when Yakov Smirnoff was a popular comedian on the late night TV shows- it comes from one of his more famous bits:

As to drain-pouring, I definitely have done it when the beer was bad/oxidized/infected. But if it's just not to my liking (i.e. too sweet, or whatever) I'll usually blend the remaining bottles to try to make something out of it. I am pretty good at self-editing in the store, so I usually don't get beers that I don't like that often.

OTOH- sometimes you have to acclimate yourself to new flavors- whether they be sour beers, smoked, high gravity, unusual in some other way- and working through those styles can pay off bigger dividends down the road if you are not just giving up after a few ounces. If a beer is well-regarded in its style, I wouldn't drain-pour that if the first sips didn't appeal to me.

Years ago I passed on buying bottles of Fantome Ete and Autumn on the shelf because I didnt think any beer was worth $12.

I wish I could go back in time and kick my own ass.
