Look for DAB Dortmunder Export; comes in .5 L cans. It's my favorite canned import lager. It has that really clean mild toffee malt character that tastes like a decoction mash, though I have no idea if they actually still do that.

Apologies if this has already been brought up and I missed it - Assinine Blue Laws. There's all sorts, enough for a thread of their own (and there's been plenty of them) but the one I'm thinking of right now, is that some states seem to require that if beer is over a certain strength, it must be labeled "ALE", even when it's a lager. That's like saying if a car's engine is over a certain size, it must be classified as "TRUCK."

There are quite a few, actually, but it all comes down to distribution. Bitburger's a pretty reliable pils that comes in cans, to cite just one example.

Not at the top level. Buy a bottle of Petrus, Cote Rotie , Clos de Vougeot or Krug and look for grape varieties on the label. In fact even a basic Bordeaux , Burgundy, Rhone or Champagne won't have it.Then there's Rioja, Barolo, Vinho Verde , Niersteiner...........we seem to manage.

That's as may be but, the states I live in haven't prohibited accompanied minors not purchasing alcohol from the premises. That's why, when I was a child, I remember going to the liquor store with my dad (he would buy me a package of honey roasted peanuts) :-)

obviously, I wouldn't violate the law, and would hope it was clearly stated on the door, so as to avoid any unnecessary confusion. Not everyone reads signs on the way in and I understand that.

Nevertheless, if he doesn't want kids in his store, he could make a policy independent of local laws as well, and he owned it.

Yeah, everyone says kids these days are worse than the kids before. It's a trope that stands the test of time. i think it's a bit of vanity, right, you don't want to believe that you ever misbehaved as a kid, so don't want to assume kids are kids.

I control my kid in the store. Am I a crappy parent, yeah, I'm pretty crappy, apparently, because I drink in front of him, take him to liquor stores, brew beer in front of him, and take him in alcohol-serving establishments. And I'm sure in 20 years, we'll continue down this demonization of alcohol path to make it seem like ****, children can't even see the bottle, has to be hidden in a paper bag. (grumbling in part by the annoyance of having to type in my birthdate for every brewery website ever).

Which I will add to a big beer pet peeve: the fact that you have to constantly type your birthdate in brewery websites. Like that's going to do anything. It's even more incapable of preventing minors from looking at those sites as electrical tape is for sealing bottles and wax for helping age a beer!

My biggest beer pet peeve is that people care so much about what others think when they drink a beer. People post threads all the time asking if it's ok to drink a certain beer. I also find it annoying that people can thumb their noses so easily in this community.

The craft beer community has morphed from being about great beer to being about social status.

I agree. I have taken my children when they were young & currently take my grandchildren with me when I go to a liquor store. They don't drink that much, I make them stop after 1 or 2 of the whiskey tastings. [Yes this is a joke]

I totally agree with this...However (and let the heavens open with criticism) I think that Sam Adams is not as bad as people make it out to be...AND (Gasp)...I believe Jim Koch's heart is in the right place, he just let too many things get away from him...his fault, but I don't think he's a bad guy...so I would say a pet peeve is unnecessary shit talking (not just Sam Adams by any means)...You have to remember, not everyone can be Hill Farmstead and EVERYONE is out to turn a profit, period. The beer world is more complex than small heroes and huge villains...and I think many know that...I support the small guy first out of instinctually wanting to keep things regional, smaller, less distance between brewer and drinker and all the good stuff that comes with true community supported craft, I just can't knock those who have made it just because they have...

In many of those cases the varietals used can be assumed based on local traditions, and in some case old world wine varietals for a particular appellation are mandated by national wine law. That is why (IIUC) varietal labeling became common with new world wines - because such the new world regions mostly lacked local traditions indicating which grapes were used where.

AFAICT nothing similar applies to beer and hops.
