I don't know where Koch got the 80-85 number either (perhaps his numbers were based on lab testing rather than one or more of the formulas used by brewers instead of lab work.)

But there's a lot of reasons to believe that anything more than about calculated 100-110 IBUs makes no difference to perceived bitterness.

    https://beerconnoisseur.com/articles/whats-meaning-ibu

The fundamental problem with IBUs is that they don't in fact measure perceived bitterness in any meaningful way, they just measure the presence of some of the bittering agents in the beer. (See article linked to above.)

When you go to the same bar, but different bartenders fill their 14 oz pours to different levels. Or they count a shit ton of foam as part of the pour... I'm getting mad just thinking about it.

    1) When a brewery gets by on reputation alone and people go crazy over beers that I guarantee if tasted blind wouldn't compete with some regular shelf beers.

    2) When certain breweries seem to release everything they brew regardless of how it actually turned out. Variety is great but not when half the shit you are brewing is awful.

I'd agree that this is annoying, but take solace in the fact that this stuff never lasts long. Fanboys are a fickle bunch.

This is where people NEED to be educated about beer and vote with their wallet. There is a LOT of less than acceptable beer out there, but when you have a bunch of people who are homers or apologists, the blind endorsement of everything certain breweries do can become problematic.

Restaurants (or breweries for that matter) that pay to be verified on untapped, or whatever they call it on beer menus, but then when u check to see if u want to stop by for a brew and a bite they haven't updated it for weeks... why bother having it?

Servers who just tell u brewery names when asked about what's available

    Non-properly maintained tap lines.

Way too cold pours on the wrong beers...
Star of Connecticut's dirtibution limited selection compared with just states right next store.

And right now the difficulty of me finding a good bottle share group to join. (Any ideas how to do thin in/around central/eastern CT?) any help greatly appreciated...

    Cheers!

This is an indication that the server does not drink beer or drinks AAL BMC - pretty much the same thing. In their world, a beer is called Bud, Miller, Coors, etc and that says it all. So then they're told Lagunitas or Boulevard is on tap and they assume that says it all. If you ask the actual name or style of a beer - you either get the confused dog head-tilt, or a rolling of the eyes that means "oh great, another beer expert".

Try explaining why it matters and they can't get away fast enough. So they go ask the bartender more about the beer and they come back and say something useful like "it's light colored". Then you order a diet coke, and your non-craft companion says "I thought you wanted a beer". Now I stop at the taps upon arrival and check for myself, but rarely get anything because craft selections at chain restaurants are usually IPAs or PAs, which I'm not into. I don't settle, if I can't get craft I like then I don't drink.

It is the eternal question though. Is Heady Topper really substandard compared to what it once was, or have our palates changed? Or both?

Breweries that release a mistakenly infected beer and call it a sour. Sometimes its just better to dump stuff.

Then don't. How is that a pet peeve when the only way it affects you is if you decide to show up and participate?

I don't trust any content from the uber-pretentious Good Beer Hunting. No way his client list does not affect his journalism. I am also glad people are starting call out the hypocrisy of much of his content.

4 packs of 16 oz cans are the worst.

I'm mostly a "two beers a night" guy. But sometimes I want three. Then I have to go spend more money and I don't want to spend more money.

    2+1 and 2+1 = 6...... a six pack for the 2 (possible 3) a sitting makes for 2 (or 3) sittings. Math evens out a lot nicer with 6 than 4. lol

Folks only buy a 4 pack or a six pack? Who doesn't have the beer fridge full of multiple choices? I probably have at minimum 10 -15 choices in the fridge and many more in the cellar. Math again? Open the door, grab a beer, drink. Repeat as needed. No math needed.
