Rare is not a quality, therefore I respectfully disagree with your foundation. Somelier's can describe something better, but what they taste is the same thing.

Then you also should be able to recognize that the fact that the top 50 beers in that list can indeed be said to be in an equivalence class but that doesn't mean there are no discernable differences between then and that the objectification using numerical rating scales only applies to the characteristics being assessed. However there can still be meaningful and objective differences between them that are not being assessed.

Is it only beer you hold this view for, or do you discourage folks from diving into the deep end of the cheese world too?

Back up son, you're not ready for that Roquefort!

I agree. My point was that if we really hold beer in such an academic light, then why is the fruitbowl only have apples and oranges in it? Elitism in beer is embarrassing for the entire community of beer drinkers

Can you elaborate a bit? How does the fact that some people are able to educate their palates and then discern flavor complexities, go against what beer is?

I actually think you may be confounding expertise with snobbery. There is a difference.

Why does it seem to you to be elitism. Is it elitism for you to be a more experienced and more skilled marketing researcher than the average person on this site?

I totally agree with you and then again, I totally disagree ... Your big point that someone new to craft beer cannot appreciate the subtle nuances of a more experienced drinker is completely correct. There are lots of beers I had the chance to drink early on in my craft beer exploration that I did not appreciate at the time (and would love to have the opportunity to go back and have again now).

I think this is the point you were trying to make - not that you would snatch a 5oz taster of KBBS out of some new money n00bs hands and snap "You're not worthy! Grow a real neckbeard first!"

That being said, its just beer, and I've yet to have a beer that was so far above any other that it blew me away. its the reason I couldn't care less to ever seek out KBBS ... I do not believe that its that much better than some of the other similar well done beers that are more readily available.

You are exactly right. Hype and rarity are not something that even the most refined palates can discern.

Never once said what you are implying. You're getting bothered probably because you are a little embarrassed about how seriously you take a subject that is inherently about leisure and joy. Just like you're doing to the discourse. Sucking all of the air out of it with your inability to allow others to have a POV that deviates from yours.

Go educate your palate. Go fill your basement with beers you're afraid to drink. Do what makes you happy.

You seem to be perturbing what I am saying, or at the very least misinterpreting.

Rarity only matters in terms of value if it is widely accepted by good. Thus, I was referring to the subset of beers that are rare AND good (which is part of what makes it rare. A 500 bottle run of a beer no one wants to drink is only rare compared to a much larger run, but is not rare when compared to demand. Demand for a 500 bottle run that is widely considered to be stellar is very high, compared to non-existent for a "bad" beer.)

And, No, what they taste is not the same thing. I literally have a bitter sensitivity that prevents me from tasting what others can. Literally. I can't taste what a sommelier would. This has nothing to do with rarity, this has to do with the quality of your palate for the point I was making.

This also says almost nothing about what drtth was saying, which is talking about training your palate. Mine cannot be trained because I have a sensitivity. Others can. Prior to being able to focus on and pick up on nuances, you won't get them. It's analogous to the idea of savoring vs. straight out consuming, but in a different way.

    Now who's inferring?

I am simply reading your words. Nor am I embarrased about my interest in beer or improving my ability to detect the flavors in beer, since for me beer is indeed about leisure and joy so my somewhat amaturerish experiences have in fact increased my enjoyment of the wide variety and complexities in various beers which I drink at my leisure.

I'm not even beginning to tell you what you can and can not do or enjoy. Again you are inferring what is not neither intended nor implied.

Fill my basement with beers I"m afraid to drink?

You are now displaying some really elitist attitudes. The 20-30 beers to be found in my cellar aging are there for a specific purpose, i.e., leisure and enjoyment.

    Why are you so defensive?

I don't know about all of you, but I have a palate, its the best palate, the most refined palate. I can taste all the best flavors like hype, independence, love, rarity ... Sorry haters but my palate is the best.

I get the difference between rare and limited and the subjectivity that separates the two.

You and me, we're worlds apart. Let us move in opposite directions. You, towards sensory enlightenment, and me towards a cold beer.

Hopefully next time we cross paths you won't find it necessary to get to the bottom of me.
