I thought I'd start up a thread dedicated to Bigwood. Looks like they didn't blow any kegs yesterday so people going tonight might benefit from some likes and dislikes. Tried only 6:

    1. Mother of All Storms (delicious)
    2. Vanilla B-Bomb and Old Bridge Rider (tie)
    4. Rum-barrel Victory at Sea
    5. Firestone Hat Trick (good not great)
    6. Black Raven Brandy Wheat Whine (mediocre)

I had the Black raven Wheat Wine last year at their open house. It kind of blew me away. I wonder if this one was aged in a different barrel or something...

Damn, this is added reason to use smaller pours.

I think he means the kegs blew, as in ran out...not they blew, like well, you know.

Or maybe I'm way off, who knows - I'm in my living room right now!

Firestone was disappointing. Vanilla bbomb was amazing.

I went Thursday and Friday. Some of my favorites were:

    Struise Black Damnation Blackberry Albert
Breakside Rye Barrel-aged Fresh Hop IPA
Boneyard Oak-aged Suge Knight Imperial Stout
Big Sky Four Roses Barrel-aged Old Bluehair

A big shout out to Brouwer's for hosting one of my favorite beer events of the year. The service was excellent. Thanks to Sarah on Thurs. and Kim on Friday. Food was very good.

I agree with you; wheat wine at the BR open house was amazing. I had the cognac version at big wood and found it very good. Really hope they bottle it or some variation thereof so I can age it and drink it in a more contemplative setting (yeah - I said contemplative in relation to drinking beer ... pretentious!)

My ability to gauge nuance was probably a bit impaired by having Vanilla BBomb and Surly Pentagram before. From big vanilla to sour to wheat wine isn't ideal palate preparation. For being high in alcohol the wheat wine struck me as having a lot of complexity and nuance. The cognac barrel notes are subtle. It has a dryness and a bright finish. I think it's hard for that to stand out after big stouts. Wheat wine also seems to be a style that's divisive, more so than barley wines.

Off topic speculation - is there something off putting about wheat? It seems consistent that wheat based beers are love / hate and in general earn lower ratings - hoppy wheats, hefes, etc.

In addition to several (generally tasty) beers that were new to me, his year I also mixed in a few old favorites. Finished happily on Deliverance, because I love that damned beer, I'm afraid to buy it in bottles, and (compared to bottle prices) it's a steal at $9/12 oz.

Couldn't make Bigwood, but from hearing the expected hype about Vanilla Bbomb and knowing Fremont just added the vanilla to the kegs, rather than brewing with vanilla, I'm gonna be experimenting with vanilla beans and my horde of Bbomb very soon!

Shit, I may be creating my own Bbomb line here at home:

    Coffee
    Vanilla
    Coconut
    Pork
    Snapple
    Cheetos
    Dirt

Good luck making Bbomb taste bad :sunglasses:. Not gonna happen

If it's gonna happen, Cheetos will be the agent.

I was not a fan of the vanilla bbomb, way too much vanilla, the regular bbomb is better IMO

And this year's BBomb is phenomenal. It's been a while since I've had the 2011 (which won bronze at the WBC behind Sam Adams Utopias and King Henry), but I'm almost convinced that this year's is the best yet.

I feel like Fremont continues to improve Bbomb every year. The 3-year vertical they did at the brewery last year really sold me on it.

It's one of the best beers out there, but yet it's only #179 on the top 250. What a joke.

Out of 102,099 beers in the BA database, it's number #179 and you're complaining that it isn't being recognized as "one of the best beers out there"?
