Will be staying downtown Birmingham this Friday with the family en route to FL for vacation. Good People, Cahaba, and Avondale all have taprooms. Good people mentions that "anyone under 21 be accompanied by a guardian." I've emailed all of them about family friendliness of their taprooms. I'd like to get opinions on bringing the wife and the 1.5 and 3.25 year olds with me (around 6-7ish PM) or having them stay back at the hotel. Are any of these places (more) family friendly? I saw a post that Avondale has a huge outside area which I imaging bodes well for kids. Do others bring their families or will I look like more of a moron than I usually do? Another question is I know they don't serve food and was looking for opinions on which one is best suited to good food close by (assuming I could bring the kids). Thanks in advance - much appreciate any advice.
I routinely take my 17 month old son to Good People. Food options are limited. Cahaba's owners include several parents. Food options are limited. Avondale has the outside area, but is also in close proximity to Saw's BBQ and Post Office Pies (pizza place).
Cahaba has free skeeball (or at least did last summer); can't imagine any better way to keep the kids entertained while you take care of drinking.
I typically see kids at Good People early in the afternoon on weekends. On Saturday afternoons I even see parents with babies on blankets in the side patio. But they don't have food, food trucks, or a nearby restaurant. Cahaba has skeeball, picnic tables, and should have a food truck on Friday. I often see kids there. Avondale is more of the young adult crowd but you could easily take your kids next door to Post Office Pies for pizza and they have almost all of Avondale's beers on tap for the same price. You can also get the pizza to go and eat in Avondale's big courtyard. There is also a world class hole in the wall bbq place called Saw's next door you can get to go. That being said, usually the taprooms turn into mostly adult bars by 8pm or so.
