Hi All, I am in Birmingham for one evening, during the week. Is there a cluster of quality beer spots that stay open reasonably late, maybe with hotels close by? Thanks-
Yes most are in the downtown area in a 2-3 mile radius. Hop City is the best bottle shop and they have over 60 taps so you can drink there as well. J Clyde is the best beer bar and has great food. You can also drink at the brewery tap rooms. I would suggest Good People or Avondale. Their are hotels scattered around downtown from the civic center area to UAB. Lots of options there
I second Mover's suggestion but would add Trimtab Brewery as a suggestion. It's in the same area. You can't buy growlers at the breweries but if you make HopCity a stop after a couple of breweries they do sell growler fills and have one section of their wall devoted to local beer. If you're a HopHead be sure to try SnakeHandler by Good People.
Got to give Cahaba Brewing some love too. All four breweries and Hop City are within 3 or so miles of each other. The J. Clyde is just up the hill and will be open later.
hi all - What is good on the shelves this week? Will be in town tomorrow through the weekend for Talladega (work). Staying in UAB so near J. Clyde and everything around there. thanks!
J Clyde and Hop City are your 2 essential destinations if you don't have time for brewery tours, Do the brewery tours if you can
Gotta give a shout out to the guys/girls at Trimtab. I was in Birmingham for a conference last week and made it over to the brewery before close and had a fantastic time. Great beer, great people, and a great time. Trimtab was one of the only breweries I hadn't made it to yet, but it'll be the first I go back to next time I'm in town. If they're open while you're there, they have a fantastic IPA, enjoyable Berliner Weiss, and a couple barrel aged rye brown ales showing up from time to time (the regular brown is great, too). Grab a flight and talk to the locals and "the man in charge." They're really fun people!
thanks all! had some great beers at J. Clyde...cannot go wrong there. Unfortunately, was working too much to hit a brewery, maybe next time. Special shoutout to Ollie Irene, insanely good food, and a couple local good beers on tap. thanks again!
