All the time. However, I do that with a lot of things and it's not exclusive to beer. I have other hobbies and interests that I spend extensive time researching and experiencing. When I come across situations similar I don't say anything because at the end of the day what does it matter to me? Some bar tender thinks craft beer is gross and loves bud, meh doesn't matter to me. I usually keep my opinions to myself unless it's a particular environment or if a person cares about my opinion.

I just remember one time asking this guy who worked at a bottle shop what a bier de garde was, and he laughed and said he doesn't drink that crap he only drinks corona and went on about why i shouldn't waste my money. I thought it was odd because of where he worked. I didnt need to hold my tongue or anything. I just thought it was funny.

I ask my local store owner about new releases all the time I see on here, he tells me no they don't make that. Then a couple weeks later he gets it

This nails it for me... being European though standards are different... I was amused to have people in a party 'pleased' that I brought a Bud six-pack with me. I'm keeping the good American stuff for me, at 4€ the 25cl bottle no wonder...

That said I'm not going to be picky or judgemental with bad beers people drink at bars or bring in my own place, that's just rude. If I don't like it, I'd rather not make a snarky comment.

Once at a German place, here in town, I ordered a dark beer to go with my late breakfast. I got an ice cold beer and a frosted glass. I asked the waitress to rinse the glass out for me as they didn't have any clean, unfrosted glasses at they time. She did give me a strange look, but complied with my request. I let them both sit at the table until the food was served.
After I enjoyed my breakfast and bier, the German lady who owned the place came over to my table to tell me that I drank beer the way it's done where she comes from in Germany.
    So how about that!

I don't say anything unless it's dirty glassware or frozen glasses. Still haven't run into dirty draft lines but that would be something I'd bring up also.

Glad it worked out for you, though in the interests of full disclosure and not gloating in any away, I must admit to being a West Ham fan.

I never want to be "that guy" but I have a buddy who was always buying IPA's way past their date I mean shit that should have been taking off of the shelf months ago but never wanted to come across like I was turning my nose up to the beer he brought to my house. One day I had a bunch of guys over for beers and the topic of dates and IPA's came up and to find out my friend didn't even know that you wanna drink them pretty fresh. It was pretty cool that he learned that without someone pointing it out and making him feel small.

This is interesting because if he still digs them then it's irrelevant whether you consider them old. However their freshness or lack thereof could be contributing to his (possibly negative, or somewhat skewed) opinion of these IPAs. Good on you for educating without demeaning.

A few weeks ago I went to a local higher end restaurant for the first time, and was pumped to see they had a half dozen craft beers on tap. I picked a stout I had first tried and liked elsewhere a few weeks earlier. When I got it, it didn't taste the same as before. As I drank it, I got a stronger and stronger metallic taste. For some reason I felt compelled to finish it, didn't say anything, and had another - different - beer. I tried to get rid of the taste and couldn't, even after the second beer, supper, and some mixed drinks. In fact, it took about 24 hours to get rid of the taste. I researched it a bit on BA and realized it was likely infected. I considered calling and telling them, but never did.

You have to realize where you are and what the clientele is. If you are in a small town dive bar, (I love shitty small town dive bars) that clearly don't have anything more "craft" than Boston Lager at best, what's the point of bloviating about how much you know? Have a PBR and don't be a douche. On the other hand, if you're in a place known for higher-end selections, it's a completely different story. It's a when in Rome situation.

I agree with this, at least they were trying a little by offering some craft. But you always have to pay attention to what the bar is intended for. Beer tasting not so much as Everybody Loves Raymond on the TV and Ice cold Icehouses all around!

I tend to steer clear of places that do not serve what I want to drink. If it is a funky enough dive bar I might go in and check it out and if I'm thirsty there is always bourbon - straight up, no ice, no soda, no water, don't put anything other than bourbon in the glass please, etc (some people need explaining). A couple of times when I have ordered bourbon I have had someone bring me a Jack Daniels and another time a Jamesons and there was one time when I ordered a margarita and the bartender asked me it I wanted it made with gin or vodka. Sometimes it is fun to just go with the flow. I never explain or discuss beer unless asked. Generally people are curious and fun if given half a chance.

One time in the Golem in Amsterdam I was having a hard time ordering in Dutch. After about five minutes the Dutch couple next to me told me that my Dutch was fine, that the bartender did not know beer and that I should only order beer from Klaus. Klaus understood me fine.

I rarely go out for beer, so when I do, it's been calculated and weighed out. I do still occasionally find myself in situations where I have to bite my tongue, but I don't do it begrudgingly. Sure, I could talk your ear off about beer, glassware, bicycles, or even coffee - but no sense in providing a lecture on it in store/bar. That's usually where people start getting offended.

If I am out with friends, I'll usually order whatever is the cheapest beer they have on hand. If I'm going to be drinking it out of a bottle or a plastic cup, no sense in spending any extra money on it. Especially if your friends are buying round after round of Miller Lite. I'll just cleanse my system with craft beer the next day.

I stopped ordering beer, wine or booze in restaurants years ago. Don't order desserts or appetizers either. The mark-ups have become ridiculous.

Diet Pepsi OR Mountain Dew? Aren't those different ends of the spectrum? "Hey, I'll have a gose, or a DIPA, whichever".

That hasn't happened to me but I look forward to the day when it does so that I can say, "I'm fine with having a bottle/glass of the 'crap'." (And smiling at the server while saying it.) No tongue biting here.

I bite my tongue all the time. Mostly when novice beer geeks start talking like they know what they're talking about, but don't. Also, last weekend at Altamont Beer Works. The server (Hot, jet black hair, big "twins") tells me I'm
Wrong about them collaborating with a local up and coming brewery on a anniversary ale. I just bite my tongue until their brewer, overhearing our conversation says, "yeah, he's right." Problem with that was, she then gave me shitty service afterwards. Never trust skinny girls to know their beer.
