BJCP guidelines and Beer Competitions

    Well, I guess my milds are more innovative . I tend to add flavor and color simultaneously with tasty English malts that. Mr. Taylor apparently eschews. :wink:

    I dunno. After a holiday meal approaching gluttony, I think you should abstain. After all that pie, you can't be hungry.

    I really feel the "guidelines" should be viewed more as "rules" because at a certain point extremes in a beer mean youre exiting a certain style. Like your example, in certain brews being balanced and subtle is part of the brew

    in the saison category though it's easy to make a beer that seems big but is not as it's pretty much the "american strong ale" (catch-all) of belgian style brews.

    I want to thank everyone who's weighed in on this and it's brought to light some things I haven't thought of before. While I understand the BJCP guidelines are just guidelines, I think it's important to have some sort of distinction when it comes to certain styles so that when judging against that style, you can give a fair rating (i.e. deducting points for being too out of bounds/strong when it comes to style)

    just fyi, but this will no longer be the case with 2014 Guidelines.
