Red Racer remains holy to me.

I tried a six pack when they started distributing in Ohio. I was really unimpressed. I'll stick with Founder's and Edmund Fitzgerald any day.

Black Butte got me into the porter style. After trying many porters, my favorite still remains Anchor. I love the flavor and the $7.50/6 pack price point. I will buy that any day of the week. Sounds like I'm really missing out on the Founders and Ed Fitz. I have not seen those out here in CA.

I think the Black Butte is the best beer Deschutes makes. Their Fresh Squeezed is good, too.

Black Butte definitely got me into the style and i still love it, but I'll agree that Founders and Great Lakes are a notch above it. It's their best offering. Smutty's porter is tasty too.

Black Butte is a solid "go to" porter and ranks among my top ones. To answer the aging question, I just opened a bottle a few days ago that I've had for well over a year, and it tasted fantastic.

I'm very surprised no one has mentioned Revolution's Eugene Porter. That stuff is great! It costs a little bit more than Black Butte, but it's come down a bit. Usually only a dollar difference between six-packs. Usually $9-$10.

Despite its low ABV, I like to let Obsidian sit for a few months. It mellows out considerably. That's my $.02.

While there may be some breweries in Oregon producing beers as good or better, that's just a massive exaggeration by you. I mean, to the majority of even the biggest beer geeks, Deschutes produces some pretty good damn beer. I get why you want to put them down... to make yourself look like more of a local expert, which you are, it just doesn't really need to be done at the expense of Deschutes. At least substitute Full Sail in your statement instead.

This, Founders, Great Lakes, and Central Waters are pretty much the only basic porters I need. Always try to keep one on hand for a sessionable (to me) dark beer

I love their fresh squeezed. I think the porter is just ok.... definitely would take the obsidian for the same price.

Or "Des Fullwidme" sounds like some hood slang.

Deschutes is the Budweiser of Oregon?! C'mon man. Never has a more inflammatory thing been said :astonished:That's... Insane, brotha. Deschutes makes very good to excellent beer at a very good price; their core lineup is just about as solid as anyone's within that scale and distribution range. Are there breweries making much better beer? Sure, but definitely not in that price range or with the same availability.

Black Butte is awesome; it's probably the main culprit in introducing me to and getting me hooked on craft beer, and I still enjoy a sixer now and then. Are their better porters? I can think of others that are great in their own right, but I can think of none that blow it away.

Black Butte is the porter by which I judge all other Porters. Still have 3 in my fridge, and I feel lucky to have them as they do not distribute to NC.

I prefer their Obsidian because I'm more into stouts than porters, given the choice, but Black Butte is still a solid porter. I respect that Deschutes was able to make a flagship beer out of a porter when the region is so identified with IPAs.

Agree wholeheartedly. It's not strong enough to withstand the ravages of time. Drink it now or soon, trade for more later if you want more.

I prefer Black Butte with a little bit of age myself, around 2 months or so, to let the hops die down a bit and have the chocolate and roast character to come through. Fresh, the hop bitterness might overwhelm the palate.

After the Deschutes beer army rolled through SE PA earlier in the year, it seemed to me they were looking to replace the area's GL taphandles and the EF Porter in particular. Side by side comparisons show the EF hard to beat.

Black Butte is quite good and I enjoy it from time to time. Obsidian, on the other hand, is incredible and I drink a minimum of several six packs a year.
