Hi Everyone. I'm new to home brewing and this forun has been very helpful. I have a Black IPA that will be ready for bottling this weekend. Should I cold crash it or not? I have read many threads and in general, the opinions are about 50/50, but I haven't found anything regarding Black IPAs specifically. I was thinking to go with 2 days at 34*F with a solid stopper to prevent oxygen from getting through the airlock. Please let me know is this make sense or what's the best practice.

any ipas are especially sensitive to oxygen ingress. I personally wouldn't cold crash without positive pressure from CO2 or knowing it is a sealed environment like a keg. Some people may disagree with me on this, but I would prefer to give it an extra day or two to let settle over cold crashing...clarity is pretty low on your priority list anyway with a black IPA.

    Welcome to the hobby!!

I wouldn't cold crash with a solid stopper - that won't stop the beer from contracting, so depending on what type of vessel you are using, that could be problematic. Also when you open it up to transfer it's going to suck in all that air anyway.

I'd let it ride and then bottle as gently as possible ! I'd maybe even bottle right off the fermenter using carbonation drops in the bottles.

Personally I would never cold crash a beer that I was bottling. Too much risk for oxygen exposure. You’ll basically be cold crashing later on in the bottles anyway- that is after your bottles are carbed and chilled before serving.

Thank you guys for the feedback. I won't cold crash unless I upgrade to kegs later on.
