Here's a style I can get behind. Ive only had a few so far but they've all been good. Combining a porter/stout with an IPA is a win win.

Glad you enjoy them. For me the flavors clash terribly. I've only found two to date that I've enjoyed, & both were on tap & extremely fresh - perhaps that's the key.

Cool story bro. But yeah, FW Wookey Jack is one of my favorite beers.

Not sure I would call them a porter/stout/IPA combo, but whatever.

Some Black IPAs I love, some not so much. Stone SSRA is the best, followed closely by Firestone Wookey Jack. Both super, super hoppy and both super, super delicious.

This is in my backyard, but I just can't warm up to Victory's Yakima Glory. It's OK, but not fantastic IMO.

I've had one that I would have again, Wookey Jack. I just can't get into this style despite trying many times.

I like these black ipa's too, I wasn't sure I would the first time I tried one but wookey Jack won me over. I'll be trying any black ipa I can find.

Toxic Sludge took me by surprise. Very enjoyable black IPA in my opinion.

If you get the chance (sold in WI only) try New Glarus Black Top - the best black IPA of about 15 that I've tried

I find the roasted character rounds out the sweetness making black IPA's a more balanced offering.

If you gave me the same beer non-black, I would find it way too sweet.

Very fresh Hop in the Dark and Big Hapi are nice beers.

I could do without the style completely though.

I'd rather have a 4.0 IPA than a 4.75 Black IPA every day of the week.

I am really getting into the black IPA's as well. I thought In The Name Of Suffering was great. I also am a big, big fan of Dubhe BIPA by Uintas. I can see now, by this thread, that I have to give Wookey Jack and some of the others listed a try.

Odell Mountain Standard is very good too, as well as Uinta Dubhe! I think this beer style is tough to pull off and get the balance right.

The only problem is that if you call it a "Cascadian Dark Ale" or an "American-style Black Ale" then it doesn't taste as good.

Wookey Jack was better than suffering imo. Give toxic revolution a try if you can get to fff, billed as a stout ale but it tastes more like a black ipa to me and was a little better than suffering.

Definitely one of my favorite styles to drink and brew. I really love the "offensiveness" of a great black IPA. I tend to like my black IPAs with a little bit more roasty character compared to something like Sublimely Self Righteous (and no, I'm not talking stout). I think it is one of the most intense and delicious styles of beer.

I don't see why this style is so under-appreciated by so many people. I happen to enjoy the combo of chocolatey roasty citrusy hops.

Went to Vermont this weekend, and can say that Hill Farmstead James is a great Black IPA. However I had a Zero Gravity Narconaut (another VT brewery) that I thought was an even better Black IPA.
