It's been very hit or miss with me. Not sure what exactly it is about Wookey Jack but its the only one that truly impressed me. Most others have been drinkable and enjoyable but nothing I would routinely buy. Honorable mention goes to Otter Creek Alpine Black IPA, which I enjoy on tap from time to time.

This style is hit or miss for me. The misses have clashing cloying sweetness/coffee or are ipas w black food coloring. I dig Santa Fe's, Greenbush anger, and Stone's.

I've had some truly terrible ones.. (Hop Villain, Black Cannon, Dogzilla). However, Sublimely-Self Righteous, Wookey Jack, Hoppy Bunny, and Dubhe really really please my palate. If it weren't so up and down this would be one of my favorite styles.

Oh, and the Stone 15th Anniversary was one of my favorite beers of all time.

Thanks for the input. I've been planning to pick up some Toxic at FFF as soon as my work schedule allows and this darn cold lets up. I thought the hops would be good for me so, I drank a Dreadnaught two nights ago but could barely taste it.

You beat me to it. That was mind blowingly good when it was fresh and I've been opening bottles every so often and it's held up surprisingly well, smoothing out nicely.

Wookie Jack is incredible. I also enjoy FFF's In the Name of Suffering as well. It's a little lighter than I remember Wookie Jack being, but it was very drinkable.

Wookey Jack, Dubhe, Sublimely Self Righteous & Hoppy Bunny have all really impressed me. I have a bottle of Grainstorm to try too. One of my favorite styles I've tried.

The only black IPA I've ever had was Short's Goodnight Bodacious and it was excellent. I highly recommend.

Definitely this. right down to your hits and misses. Grainstorm was great as well. 21st amendment back in black is average as was yakima glory. i tend to try most of the ones i see on shelves but SSR and Wookey are still my bench marks with Dubhe just behind.

So far, most of the ones I've had just taste like a hopped-up Stout or Porter. IMHO, if you're going to call a style "black IPA" "Cascadian Dark Ale" or "American-style Black Ale" it should have its own distinct flavor, not a pumped up version of an existing style.

Short's Goodnight Bodacious and Bludgeon Yer Eye are both pretty good, the former being the better IMO.

Wookie Jack was great, and whatever New Glarus calls theirs was really good too. Black Top?

Sublimely was my first black IPA, and loved it so much that I thought this would be my new favorite style.

Unfortunately, with the exception Wookey Jack, and maybe Dubhe, all others have failed IMO, so the style has become very polarizing for me.
