I also quite enjoyed Dark Penance. Intensely bitter brew.

I think in a Black IPA the hops are still the star of the show, EXCEPT, it seems like about a third of the black IPAs that I've experienced, there is a roastiness from the malt that masks the hops, thus no longer the star. For those beers, I'd say old hops are okay. But any black IPA that does not have a roasty characteristic, the hops had better be front and center and fresh for me to enjoy it to the max.

I recently found an accidentally cellared bottle of Greenbush Anger. It had to be almost two years old. I drank it last night. While the hop profile had completely faded, the roastiness of the malt profile was still outstanding! It was like drinking a totally different, but completely enjoyable beer. I think I'd like to try this with a bottle of Uinta's Dubhe ... my personal favorite.

Nighttime is delicious fresh. Once had Pipeworks Black Tuna after a few months and aroma drops out and is a totally different beer. I'd consider BIPA's in the IPA 'age' category.

All depends on the beer itself. Some black IPA's are relatively malt forward, some are hop forward, etc. Never hurts to try a bottle and see if you like it.

I bought this during a trip to LA in June. I bought 3 and the other two were relatively fresh. Tasted a lot like a Guinness. I tried the fresher one a few days after and I actually liked the "aged" one better.

Depends on the beer, and storage conditions. But I like all my beers as recent as I can.

I don't go for the style much, but when I do, I only buy them newly arrived/fresh at the store.

Fresh Dubhe and Wookey are fantastic. For awhile, Dubhe was my go-to beer and the BIPA was my favorite style.

I am working on a Blakkr that was canned on 3/30 and I think it tastes better than when I had it fresh on tap. The flavors have really developed. More hoppy than a fresh Revolution jukebox hero.
