Did anyone else go to the Black Squirrel in Adams Morgan on Friday evening for the 2012 KBS? I've had KBS many times, bottle and keg. And only twice have I been disappointed. First was ChurchKey's KBS 2013 tapping back in March or April. And the second time was at the Black Squirrel on Friday evening. Both times the KBS tasted like plain old Breakfast Stout. No bourbon, vanilla, char, or even chocolate tastes. It was pretty much straight up coffee and alcohol. If I could've sent it back, I would have. I feel bad for anyone who tried KBS for the first time from the keg at Black Squirrel, because it was not representative of what KBS is. (I'm not blaming the Black Squirrel; perhaps it was just a bad batch that they ended up with through bad luck and no fault of their own.)

To make sure my memory was right, I opened a 2012 KBS from my cellar when I got home later Friday night, and it was exactly what I expected. Smooth, bourbon-y, with chocolate, malt, and only a hint of coffee. Couldn't've been more different from the 2012 keg.

Anyone else want to chime in on their experience with the Black Squirrel's KBS?

Sorry to hear that. I can only chime in to say that I almost went up there last night...but ended up in Dupont instead.

I did go there this afternoon - a lot of Jolly Pumpkin and New Belguim leftover from the week. Also, Great Lakes Xmas.

Other than the apparent KBS debacle, I think Black Squirrel had a sneakily impressive effort during DC Beer Week.

I only got as far as Black Squirrel's sister location "Libertine" last night. The beer themed cocktails were great as was the food.

I didn't make it over there on Friday, but I've had similar experiences with aged bottles of KBS. That beer ages pretty unpredictably from my experience.
