Last week I comined a DFH 90 and Founders Porter. I got zero separation, but it was definitely a symbiosis. Deelish...

I really don't get beer mixers, beer cocktails, etc. at all. I don't screw with a great beverage the way it was intended to be enjoyed by the brewer. But that's just me.

That's what I was thinking. The only time I've ever gotten really good separation was with a Guinness with a widget in the can.

I find that simple beers make the best mixers, Rubaeus, Cerise, Decadent Chocolate, Oarsman. KBS, and the others already have a complexity of flavors on their own.

I would think you need draught, whether it be nitro or a cartridge, and you definitely need to use a spoon for the stout. I would assume the ale always on the bottom.

I applaud your audacity op. I wouldn't mix KBS with anything.

I have always wondered about these. So do the layers stay intact while you drink it?

    No!

You get separation because of different densities. The fact is that Guinness draught is a vanishingly light beer and can float on most anything due to a very low final specific gravity. BJCP guidelines list finishing gravities for dry Irish stouts as between 1.007 and 1.011 which is about the same as standard American lager.

It would be a pain, but the only way to be sure if a given beer will float on another (and stay separated) would be to use a hydrometer and de-gass a sample and measure it.

Not something I would be willing to do with any of the better beers mentioned in this thread!

We have done 120 and WWS before and called them "Pretentious Black and Tans." Not bad.

Thanks for the info. TBH, my favorite B&T does not separate, nor is it rare. Victory Dark Devil. Half Hop Devil, half Storm King. One of the better B&Ts in my humble opinion.

What you've stated makes total sense as to why it does not separate.

no way endorsing or even remember who or where i bought it from, but some guy posted some black and tan perfect pourer thing a few months ago. I bought it because my gf's parents like black and tans and thought it would be a cool novelty thing. It actually was incredibly easy to use and worked like a charm. I need to experiment with it more. I just don't know if I have the heart to experiment with a KBS. You are a brave brave man… :grimacing:

That's pretty much where I was headed with my response. It just seems like a rookie mistake, honestly. Something somebody would to to look cool. There's certainly no compliment of flavors between these two beers.

I did this with De Struise - Imperialist from tap and De Struise - Macadame from bottle last week. Not the best combination...

Problem I see with this is you have to pour the MS Nitro pretty hard to release the nitro...so I don't know how to do that over a spoon. I guess pouring it into a separate glass and then pouring it over something could work.

I had a DFH 90 and Old Raspy black and tan at a bar once. Not great separation (bartender made it), but it was tasty.

I like SN Stout on top of Torpedo, haven't experimented much further than that. They (black and tans) always strike me as more refreshing than either alone, for whatever reason.
