I'm curious if this is still floating around from the original batch and what it would take to land it. Next month I'm making a trip up to Hill Farmstead and The Alchemist, so I can get some growlers and Heady Topper to trade, so I'm hoping that'll be enough, but I really have no idea. Never traded for something that rare before.

If this is going to be ridiculous to try and land because it's the original batch, I guess I would ask the same question for my other big wants. Chocolate Rain any batch, Rare (figure this is at least as hard to get), possibly King Henry and Fou Foune.

the bad news is, that's not going to be enough. the good news is, 09 black tuesday is still floating around, so if you really want it, you could commit yourself to trading / going to tastings and get there eventually.

I do have a Cantillon LP Kriek also, but if it's gonna take more than what I originally said I'll probably just look out for something else or another vintage.

while this is even more speculation (since "is that enough for 09 BT?" is unfortunately an easy to answer question), i would guess that LP kriek + hill farmstead / alchemist would easily get BT 11 + some stuff from the cali end to make up $4$. BT 10 i have no idea at all about the current value.

(also, i have only tasted 09, so i don't know if there's much difference flavor-wise)

edit: searching "ft: black tuesday" makes me doubt my "easily" assumption, but there is this (i'll eat my hat if vintage LP couldn't trade for BCBCS or bramble, but i guess you never know).

Ok thanks for the info. Didn't realize the older vintages were that valuable, which I suppose is why I asked.

Yeah, 09 BT is probably a grey whale. Gonna need some rarity to land it. If you just want to try Black Tuesday, grab some Hill Farmstead, Heady, and post a trade for a 2011. Still plenty of that one out on the trade market.

Not sure how the beer is compared to 09. I'm sure it's a little different, but the difference is probably going to be minimal.

Having had the 11, I'd say hang onto your LP Kriek unless you're able to get it somewhat readily. I know Cantillon is becoming harder and harder to get, especially where I live since this state gets absolutely none of it.

Join or monitor Unwanted Whales BIF. There is one traded out in round 1 and more submitted in round 2.

Late last summer I traded for an '09 Black Tuesday as part of a larger trade involving two bottles of the first run of Bell's Wild One. I doubt that same trade would get done now, as we actually started the negotiation centered around something else.

Let's not forget that they'll probably make a gazillion of '12, so if OP really wants it he can just wait until '12 comes out, shouldn't be all that hard to get if every one of the ~1200 RS members get a case.

OP, totally missed the end of your post. Yes, I think most of those beers (Choc. Rain, Rare, KH, Fou Foune) will be easier to land than the '09 Black Tuesday at this point (except for maybe batch 1 Choc. Rain).

am i misremembering, or is "batch 1 choc. rain" draft only, and the first bottling "batch 2" (ie black tuesday '10)? choc rain 09 wasn't bottled was it?

You could be right. I was referring to the first bottling.

I'm surprised Rare is actually easier to get, but I saw a whale list circulating that put the 09 BT at #90 overall so...

Thanks for all the info. I'll just post an ISO when I'm about to go on my trip to see what offers I get on Chocolate Rain, etc. I just didn't realize 09 BT was so rare now. I think I could "suffer" and get the new batch of Chocolate Rain, which I like the sound of more anyway since more chocolate and vanilla is always a good thing. I don't mind cloying sweetness sometimes, so I'll just sit on it for a few years and hope the heat mellows.

Whether a beer is a "White" or "Grey" whale is not a fact at all. It really is just a bunch of beer geeks trying to classify and quantity rarity. There is no correct answer.

On topic for the thread though, 09 BT would take a whole lot though. It was the smallest batch, oldest vintage, and comes along with the mythology of the 20 malt base that the others don't have. Definitely would take more than a Cantillon LP Kriek and HF non releases to land one.

EDIT: When I say mythology, I mean more of the hype around the story that goes with it. I wasn't suggesting the malts were made up.

Not to mention it's one of the greatest beers I've ever tasted. I loved '11 BT. Like, absolutely loved it, but the '09 was 10 times better.

Not to contribute to the hype train or anything, but choo choo!

Agreed. The list is just there to provide a rough "estimate" of what you'd have to give up to get what you want and where the most hyped/rare beers stand relative to each other. There are as many different viewpoints on the relative "rareness" of the beres listed as there are BA wale hunters.

Between your list and the Unwanted Whales BIF's that have gone on it is now moderately easy to figure out what kinds of beers you'd have to trade for other beers on that list. I will say that trading value is always subjective so the list and BIF aren't always helpful

Rare Hill Farmstead might (might!) get it done. Genealogy of Morals is the only impending release that seems possible.
