Does this thread title need to be re-worded or something, underrated on a 98 overall beer does not make sense as others have mentioned.

I'd like to add some other beers I think are underrated: KBS, CBS, Westy 12, PtE, PtY, Heady Topper, Hopslam, Abrasive, Chocolate Rain, Darkness, Rochefort 10, Orval, the -ations, BCBS, Rare, Dreadnaught, Zombie Dust, M, Wooden Hell, anything by Cantillon, Black Note, and so many more. Why don't these amazing beers ever get any attention?

it's all a matter of personal taste. my take on black tuesday was that the base beer was way too hot, way too sweet, and the barrel aging was rough and crude. but if other people like the beer awesome for them. i still scratch my head at nearly every southern tier beer i've had as they have fairly good ratings. sometimes i think people that are 25 and younger may have a certain appreciation for over the top sweetness that older drinkers lose.

but whatever. all that matters is that you spend the time to develop your own tastes and preferences and follow those wherever it may go. cheers.

I was not detecting it to be too boozy either, but those are the majority of beers that I drink.

I'm not sure why there is so much confusion. I would expect BT to be higer than 98, therefore I think it is underrated. It's pretty simple math, even after a bottle or two of BT.

Maybe because I thought it was better than beers rated higher than it.

you must drink it a degree above freezing. I was surprised at how well it went down chilled, but as soon as it gets a little warm it is a hot mess IMO

yes, but why would you expect others to share that opinion?

No, half those times it was probably room temperature. I'm not totally sure since it was at tastings, but keeping beers cold at a tasting is a herculean task.

I don't find BT boozy - in fact, I think it hides the alcohol quite well. It also has a fantastic flavor, but the sweetness does become too much for me after drinking a little bit. I can see people falling in love with it based on a small tasting, but then not enjoying a full bottle nearly as much. The sweetness combined with the high price leads me to choose other BA stouts, but I am glad to have tried it once.

People who like boozy, sweet, dark fruit forward imperial stouts will probably like it. They may or may not think it's underrated since it's already rated so high.
People who think roastiness is important in a RIS will probably not like it. They will almost definitely think it's overrated.

I also think this debate shows how much more valuable the 5 point rating system is than the 100 point rating system.

I would say that 10 was pretty good but the 09 & 11 are amazingly smooth and yes under rated.

    Cheers!

Yeah, but double black just cut the chute and went for a freefall.

I don't think it's boosy at all. It could be because I drink Makers or Basil Hayden's neat when I'm on the road and not drinking beer but, BT is one of my favorites to crack open with a few buddies.

BT is so sweet, I can't drink more then a sip. Overrated in my opinion.
