Planning a trip for this fall for a game, is there anything really worth an extra day? Trying to decide on coming in a day early or just grabbing lunch somewhere before heading to the stadium

When I had to go to VA for < 6% beer, Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg was my go-to store. Don't think you need an extra day just for that though.

Slightly odd question. What do you like to do? I mean, you can do some really nice hikes in the area (Dragon's Tooth, MacAfee's Knob). The mighty New River is there if you are into boating or flyfishing. Do you mean anything beer-related? I don't hear of any great bars there, but I'm sure some are worth going to (if you can stand a college crowd). As far as bottle shops--yeah Vintage Cellar is where you want to go (bring coin). I'd suggest stocking up on your tailgating beers at the Kroger next door though to save a few.

yeah, I was more looking for bars or brewpubs - anywhere within reasonable traveling distance, doesn't have to be Blacksburg (ie, Roanoke)

In blacksburg, you do have Bull & Bones Brewpub which is right down main street. They got some good food and decent beer, its worth a stop if you are in town. I just moved back to the area a few months ago (Roanoke) and i must say since graduating from Tech back in 2007 the beer selection has really improved.

Some stops to hit in downtown blacksburg that have good selections of beer would be:

Sharkey's - decent selection, surprised in quality of tap selection the last time i was there, plus hands down best happy hour in blacksburg ($5.75 for a 34 oz. craft beer during happy hour, can't beat that!!!)

The Cellar - The upstairs area may be a little crowded but they do have a downstairs bar with a pretty cool set-up. When i was at Tech they were almost the only game in town that had a decent selection

Rivermill - This bar is tucked back on a side street but has a fairly decent selection. I haven't been back there since i moved back into town, but i remember they do have variety.

If you have the time and want to drive a little bit, Roanoke has some decent places to stop at. The main one being Blue 5, they have 40+ taps and you might get lucky with a special keg. There are a few other bars downtown that also have decent selection but haven't had a chance to check them out yet.

An hour and 1/2 north on rt 81 in Lexington is Devils Backbone Brewery. I have never been there but went to a tasting in Northern VA with 20 of their beers last night. I was definatley impressed. I have driven 81 in that area and traffic is never a problem and always enjoyed the drive during the fall when the leaves are changing. If you go for an extra day and are not into the college party scene then I would consider it.

Thats exactly what I was looking for, thanks guys! I think I'll just go with lunch at one of the places and maybe another bar or two (depending on how busy they are) since it will be a night game. Probably Bull & Bones for lunch, seems like the best option as far as food goes. Really appreciate the help!
