I had it on tap today while watching a movie at Violet Crown. Thought it was a solid black double IPA. Not sure I will be buying a 4 pack though.

Seems like they got the pricing tip from 3 floyds lol jk but it is good at least the surly version , lots of roast and chocolate with faint citrus. Dpesnt taste like an IPA but I enjoyed it

The $17.99 is a mistake on HEB's part and should be fixed by now or very soon.

I'm drinking one now. It is not the hop bomb I was hoping it would be (having sampled some 3 Floyds beers) but this is a really good beer. There's not much hop aroma for me ( granted, alergies have been bad for me lately), but there is a strong hop taste coupled with a rich, almost elegant dark malt flavor that is smooth without going over into porter/stout territory making this a very drinkable beer. I understand why it's called an Imperial Black Ale as opposed to a Black IPA.

A really good beer IMHO, just not a hop bomb...my 2 cents.

    (probably too hoppy for Blatherbeard)

Ah my bad that is correct indeed.

The back of the can clearly states "This double black as night IPA is too massive for just one brewery's efforts."

I have seen it called a Black Ale though.

I liked it but I prefer Wookey Jack and ABW HM Black IPA. I won't buy another 4 pack.

Had it at freetail earlier. I liked it but wasn't a huge fan. I would have liked a hop bomb and this wasn't.

Had it at JK yesterday (believe it was the Surly version).... loved it. Big but not overly hoppy, a well crafted ale. Can't wait to try Real Ale's version. All 3 should taste rather similar, right?

I think this release has a great flavor balance to it that most black IPAs I've had don't. Good aroma, great mouthfeel, just roasty enough with a generous amount of hops and a subtle sweetness.
Most of the time I find black IPAs to be overly hopped and not enough roasted malt flavor OR not focused enough at all on the hops, making it just a slightly more hopped stout flavor.
Great balance with this one IMO. Much nicer than any other black IPA I've had from TX for sure.

Picked up a 4 pack last night. Really enjoyed this one. Very nice roasted flavors with a little sweetness and hoppiness mixed in for a nice balance. Very well done IMO.

This is great stuff! Very impressive and in the same class as Stone 15th. I remember the 15th fonder but so it is with all memories.

I got it at Whole Foods in Dallas this week and it was ~$12 with tax. They had a whole column for it by the bar and no one was jumping to grab it.

A really solid Black IPA (not as hoppy as the Ranger Creek but leaning that way vs some others) and worth grabbing a 4-pack.
