I'm going to be "that guy" here and say I don't find fault with Blichmann here. I find it hard to understand how someone could go into electric brewing and not have done any research into the subject at all.

Common sense would have to tell you that you'd need some way to control the amount of power going to the heating element. You have to control the amount of power when you boil on a stove or on a propane burner. If you could plug it into the wall, you'd have to be constantly unplugging it and then plugging it back in once you reach boil. I also doubt that you'd be happy with its performance on 110V. It really needs 240V.

They offered to take it back. You should accept that offer.

Why would "common sense" tell me I need something more? My idea of what the boilcoil was, was something like a hot plate - you plug it in, and it just works. If you boil water on an electric stove, you turn the power on full blast and you leave it there til it's done boiling. The regulation of temperature is irrelevant if all I'm trying to do is boil. That's what I thought I was getting.

I get it: if you want temp control (like controlling mash temps) you need something additional. But to have to drop $1000 just to boil? It's not something I would have purchased had I known.

I am sympathetic. I would also be frustrated. But I also would not expect Blichmann Engineering to provide you with a free tower or a discount for your troubles. A free tower is just a ridiculous expectation. A discount might be reasonable for some companies, but as far as I can tell, they never discount their products. When homebrew retailers put stuff on sale, Blichmann products are always excluded.

It is time to (a) get a refund and take your business elsewhere or (b) keep your investment and save to get a tower. Either way, the lesson for you is to ask more questions to get reassurance that your understanding of what you are buying is accurate.

It's already been taken back. Easy enough.

Realistically, I never expected a free tower of power, but the thing I've learned is that you never get what you don't ask for. So, I asked. I would have been pumped for even a $50 Blichmann credit or something to say "sorry for the misunderstanding" or "here's some help for you to buy MORE of our product". But, oh well. There's better stuff out there elsewhere.
