Blind DIPA Tasting Results

    Ive done a couple blind tastings with IPAs and have found an interesting trend towards the first sample being the beer everyone likes the best. I feel that the oils from the hops are a bitch to scrub from my palate, and the beers I try after the first are never what I expect. For instance I had a zombie dust followed by a myrcenary one evening. Myrcenary is usually piney with a bit of tropical and citrus for me but delicious. However, following the zombie dust, all I got was onion and (oddly) tomato. The citra hops are so fruit forward that the subtle fruit flavors in the myrcenary were wiped out of existence leaving me with a skewed perception of the myrcenary. Because of this affect on the palate I take all of these blind IPA tastings with a huge grain of salt.
    Hop stoopid uses extract to bitter, as does pliny from what I have read, and both are dryhopped soooo.......

    I would take it that you and the 10 people who liked your comment have never had fresh Double Jack. It has a bit more of a malt presence than Heady and Pliny but is FAR from a malty DIPA.

    cannot wait until March and grab some fresh Chillwave Double IPA from Great Lakes. Was one of the best DIPA of 2014. Huge Mango , Pineapple smells and taste with such a dry finish. A must try to any DIPA lover ..

    To me, Abrasive is like a better version of Heady. Very similar flavor profile. Sip of Sunshine is also similar (and better than Abrasive imo).

    Of that list, to me, I'd probably go:
    Double Jack
    Heady
    Pliny
    Dirtwolf

    I just had a 3 week old 4pk of DJ and it was absolutely stellar.

    I did a blind tasting this weekend with Pliny, Heady and Permanent Funeral. There were only 4 of us, but PtE was unanimously last with PF getting more first place votes than HT.

    What were the dates, and were they all within a week or so of each other?

    That being asked, I'm still mysteriously thirsty all the sudden for some Double Jack.....

    Heady was 3M old, Pliny was 2M old, Dirtwolf was 2M old, and Dbl Jack was 1M old...so given that the results werent as surprising.
