Doing a blind IPA tasting this weekend and I am interested in seeing what people think the winner will be...below are the beers, brewery, abv and rating on BA.

We have all had RPM numerous times but the rest will be 1st or 2nd time trying for everyone.

First 4 were bottled canned within the past 3 weeks and RPM will be from a growler we pick up day of.

Cheers! I will share the results afterwards.

Stoneface IPA – Stoneface Brewing, 7.2% abv (4.39)

The Substance – Bissell Brothers Brewing, 6.5% abv (4.34)

Lunch – Maine Beer Co., 7.0% abv (4.4)

Another One – Maine Beer Co., 7.0% abv (4.31)

    RPM – Boneyard, 7.5% abv (4.35)

I've only had Lunch from that group so I'll have to go with that one. That was also probably one of the best single IPA's I've had.

Having had all ME offerings. I would say The Substance, followed by Another, and Lunch. I've never had RPM so can't comment. Might be a little unfair since Boneyard is super fresh from brewery. Not sure you know but MBC beers have been know to fall off fast. Not trying to be a jerk but just a be aware.

MBC threads get prett heated in NE Forum. Excellent beers when super fresh.

Never had any of those myself. I'll just cry into my Sculpin, Union Jack, Green Flash, Racer 5, Torpedo, Pliny, Alpine, etc...

    Lunch will conquer all :grinning:

...though that-day growler fresh RPM (whatever that is ) makes me nervous...

I have never had RPM, so I can't speak to that, but regarding the others, I predict it'll be Another One or Substance. Lunch, perhaps my favorite IPA, is extremely hoppy, but not especially bitter, so it might get overpowered in a blind tasting. Should be interesting... I gotta do more blind tastings. I think it can really teach you a fair amount about your own palate and preferences. They're all great beers (the 4 I've tasted anyway), so no doubt it'll be a tasty tasting. Cheers!

I predict you'll have a good time. I also predict that you will ruin your experience if you get too worked up about which beer is which. Such anticipation (a.k.a. "hype") functionally ruins the purpose of a "blind" tasting. Forget about what you've got and just let your palate take you on an adventure.

You may also want to throw in a few oldies-but-goodies just to mix things up a little more and add some contrast to the spectrum.

Haven't had RPM, but thinking about psychology of blind tasting with the other beers... Stoneface is very drinkable and very tasty, but might get shown up against some of the more intense flavors of the others. Speaking of intense, from my memory Substance is probably the most hop-forward of the 4 I've had. Lunch is pretty balanced, which might make it the favorite (and did well in that Paste Magazine blind taste test, which lends credence to that idea, although the competition wasn't as strong). Another One I've never liked as much as Lunch, although there are devotees out there, so if your palate lines up it could certainly win. And of course, RPM will be the freshest, so that will win.

I definitely think you have a point on the "styles" of the various beers. I also have some Trillium Congress Street and DDH Congress Street and opted to not include those in the tasting because Trilliums beers are too different from the rest in my opinion...Substance sort of has the hazy look but not to the extent of Trillium and the Trillium beers i have had are so damn fruity and distinct that I am guessing they would either win or finish last for each people...I have never had Lunch, Another One, or Stoneface together but from what I can remember all three are pretty "clean" and balanced. RPM is a little darker and sweeter. I wasnt actually impressed with Substance the two times I had it on tap in Portland so i am interested to see how i like it when stacking it up against the others...

RPM is sort of playing the role of the oldie-but-goodie for us...i know it isnt old but it is pretty much everyone's favorite single IPA and we all have it fairly frequently...I thought about throwing in Sculpin and Union Jack but at some point I think there is a diminishing return IPA tastings when you have too many and given the fact that we dont have access to 4 of the 5 beers out here I want to be able to focus most of our attention on them

I've only had Hop Venom. Been looking for a couple other Boneyard brews. If you end up with extra RPM I'd be up to taste it

Six-month old RPM should make you nervous. Day of tasting RPM will laugh at the other entries. It's not even fair.
