Stout simply meant strong. Later it got coupled with Porter and later still the porter part got dropped. So a pale stout makes complete sense.

I bought a sixer of these, they are brewed with a bunch of pilsen malt, they do taste a little like white chocolate, so I think that's why this one is called white stout as some connotation with stouts is that they sometimes have a chocolatey profile, but this stuff isn't a stout.

The first known use of the word stout for beer was in a document dated 1677 found in the Egerton Manuscript, the sense being that a stout beer was a strong beer not a dark beer.

Carton's Regular Coffee is probably the best coffee beer I've ever had. I doesn't claim itself to be a "blonde stout" or anything like that (actually it's a cream ale), but it had more complex roasted coffee notes than any stout that I've ever had.

Currently you are mostly correct, while historically that was not always the case.

In the mid 18th and 19th centuries Stout could have just meant a Stout beer. Higher strength and flavor.

I liked that beer so much the day after I first tried it, I went back to the store the next day to clear them out

Cigar City and Hardywood had their MilkMaid White Stout a few months ago. If I were blindfolded I don't think I would have guessed it was a stout, but it was still a bit of a brain teaser.

Could Stone's Master of Disguise be considered a blonde stout?
